Re: Another Australian story I just don't get.
Sadly, most of the world is like Australia in this respect, and for most of human civilization. In much of Medieval Europe, defending yourself, especially from an attacker from a higher class than yours, frequently meant that you would be a victim of the government's wrath as well.

Not surprising at all. Australia has a weak Constitution so their elected leaders have way too much power to push agenda at their whim. That's how they were able to get away with massive gun confiscations.

Yes and no. Especially in the cities you will come across a lot of nanny state stuff and things like absurdedly low speed limits, but once you get away from the city it's more sparse and Australia doesn't have the lawsuit suing culture like we have so you'll notice some differences.

Well one thing is voting is mandatory so a lot of stupid people vote.
Next is they really need a Tea Party type revolution to get some conservative ideas going. The more conservative parties, the Liberals and Nationals have a lot of pussies in their federal ranks. There are a few off shoot more conservative parties but the problem with those is the platform is based around an individual rather than a idea.

On a side note...An American nurse on exchange to Australia walks in a patient's room. The patient says, "I'm going home to die." She checks his chart and says, "You certainly are not. Who told you that?" The patient replies, "The doctor." The American nurse says, "Well, you must be mistaken." He says, "I better not be. First, the doctor told me I could go home yester-die, and I didn't, so I better be going home to-die!"

Sounds like a perfect reason for shoot, shovel, shut up.
Reminds me... need to go stock up on really hefty garbage bags and black plastic tarps.
