^^^ this. I have a 10-8 that was an NYPD trade-in. It's a heavy barrel with a Pachmayr grip. The bluing is excellent, except for the muzzle wear, and the trigger is amazingly smooth and crisp, with no take-up in SA. It came with a black leather S&W break-front level-II retention holster that looks like it's been in a few street scuffles, and has small dents from the patrol car's seat belt. I couldn't believe I got such a well-made revolver for $300, especially one that tells a story like that.

I got my 10-8 in about the same shape for $175. It is my house gun.

The S&W M&P .38/Model 10. In any configuration; it's the original Point N' Click interface. Simple, accurate, reliable. No more needs to be said.

I've also got a 10-10 as a house gun. Picked it up for use by my late GF, who found her Taurus 85 a bit too kicky for prolonged range use. As much as she liked my Ruger GP100, she wanted something that was "hers." As it was her "house gun," not meant for carry, we let it be "hers."

After she passed, I kept it and took it out. It's as accurate as I can be with it, and a great teaching tool for new shooters stepping up from rimfire.

There was a time that the Model 10 was almost a commodity gun - always available at pretty much the same price for a decent trade-in. Prices have been going up for both this model and the 15 (adjustable sights). If you don't own one, think about doing so before the market dries up.

Just bought a 10-6 here on the forum. Wear on the bluing and some dings here and their, but lockup is tight and barrel looks good. I don't mind the wear and dings, they were come by honestly. Can't wait to shoot it.

One of the ways of identifying a NYPD revolver (at least from the days of their old style issue holster) was the bluing would be worn on the side just below the cylinder latch. That was because the officers would have to stick their thumb in between gun and holster to loosen it to draw. It would also indicate the officer did a lot of patrol work.
