Default Wondering about stamping on S&W model 36

Picked up a sweet model 36, J121XXX which is approximately 1972 or '73. Aside from the serial number there is a G10 stamped in two places. Anyone know what that G10 could be? Thanx.

On what two places may these G10 stamps be found?

They are assembly numbers or inspector's marks. Absolutely meaningless outside the factory.

One is on the crane below the crane/frame number. The other is on the grip frame, left side, neatly following the numbers. I say neatly, because it is very legible. The stampings on the crane are tough to read. If it wasn't for the good one on the grip, I wouldn't be certain of it on the crane.

    ....assembly numbers or inspector's marks.

OK. Thanks for this. Was just wondering. Didn't recall seeing such on other Smiths.

It has been on S&Ws since the early M&Ps, (not the plastic ones, but the real ones from 1904 onwards). Dave_n
