You were likely shooting your milsurps much slower due to them being (mostly) bolt guns with smaller capacity magazines which you were also probably loading manually.
I have a bolt 30-06 savage that gets hot after shooting about 10 to 15 rnds down it, 5 rnd magazine on that.

If your last AR type experience had an m203 that's one hell of a heat sink. And the 203 would also keep your hands far enough away from the barel more to not notice the heat.

Shoot slower with more pauses in between if you want less heat.
Also, there is no "break-in" period for the barrel to cause more or less heat.

1 or two mags at that pace is quite a lot compared to what else you listed. How often do you put 60 rounds down range in a few minutes with a milsurp rifle? I know I don't do that very often if ever.

It's normal. Hell it'll warm up after a few quick shots...

As the others have said, it is completely normal. The only thing I can suggest to not heat up the barrel as you describe is to NOT fire any rounds through it, and that certainly isn't any fun.

Nothing to worry about even my 24" Bull barrel gets pretty hot after a Mag or two. If you are shooting for tiny accuracy groups you would have to let it cool but for banging away at steel or large targets have at it cause you aren't going to hurt it.

Try a first gen Mini-14 stainless if you want to experience hot.

Yes they will get very hot and in low light conditions the gas tube will glow red, this is perfectly fine. without full auto you will probably never get it hotter than it was designed to handle. We would get our M-16 A1's hot enough on auto to "smell" the metal cooking
