Hot barrel AR-15s
I'm full of questions today. I have a Stag Arms AR-15 model 2 that I won at the 2016 Great American Outdoor show. I was curious if it is normal for an AR-15 with a 16.5 inch barrel to get hot after only a magazine or two. This is the first AR I've owned, the last one I operated was an M-16A2 with 203 under barrel while in the MI National Guard. Is it maybe that the barrel just needs more rounds through it, or is it because it is a gas operated rifle with the shorter barrel that makes it get hot fast. They way I shoot it, when I shoot it is usually one shot every two to three seconds.
The rifle only has cosmetic changes since I got it, mostly magpul furniture like a hand guard, vertical grip, and one of the fancy pistol grips. Is there anything I can do to the rifle that would be inexpensive or easy to make it run a little cooler?

Re: Hot barrel AR-15s
I don't believe so, I stop shooting it once I can feel the heat on my hand holding the vertical grip. The barrel itself gets hot enough to burn my hand if I touch beyond the hand guard. I've maybe put a 300 hundred rounds through the rifle since I got it.

Re: Hot barrel AR-15s
Yes, I know not to touch the barrel. I was just using that as an example.
I've been shooting for about 20 years and I've never really had an issue with barrels getting hot before. I used to own and shoot a lot of old milsurps like enfields, nagants, skss, even had an old post war m-1 carbine. The carbine is the only trouble I ever had, I was shooting questionable ammo, and it failed to seat fully and when I shot it, blew a chunk out of the stock. I thought I was going to be blind for a minute because all the excess gasses blew into my face. Had to have a shop repair that one after that. That was around 2001 or 2002 when I was still in my teens.Last edited by spandexlurch; September 21st, 2017 at 08:44 PM. Reason: spelling and grammer

Re: Hot barrel AR-15s
Is it a pencil/lightweight barrel? That makes a big difference.
My lightweight build barrel gets HOT after just 20 rounds and STAYS hot for 20 minutes or so.
EDIT: Nevermind. I looked it up.
Barrel: 16", 4140 steel, chrome lined, government profile, manganese phosphate coated
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Maybe a rail mounted, solar powered cooling fan?

Re: Hot barrel AR-15s
Its supposed to be that way. Its physics. Just shoot it. You aren't going to hurt it in semi auto.
You were likely shooting your milsurps much slower due to them being (mostly) bolt guns with smaller capacity magazines which you were also probably loading manually.Last edited by marinville; September 21st, 2017 at 10:05 PM.
