Default 500 round break in period - fact or fiction? I say humbug!

Who would sell a product that does not work new out of box? And, in fact, have any of you ever read in a new pistol manual directions that to get reliable results a weapon must be fired at least 500 times?

Don't you think it is reasonable that a modern and well engineered semi auto pistol ought to function at 100% right out of the box after, maybe, an initial cleaning and lube?

If it actually was the case that some pistols required such a "break in period" then you think at least that that gun manufacturers would shoot the requisite number of rounds before selling their gun thus rendering it reliable at the start to the consumer.

Now, I am sure that with use and practice a shooter can get more comfortable and knowledgeable with the aim and function of his/her weapon but to say that a break in period is necessary for reliable function I think is a s-t-r-e-t-c-h.

    What do you think?

I know most manufacturers recommend cleaning and lubing first but my favorite shop is 20 minutes from my club so I've taken most of my purchases out of the box, ran a bore snake then put them to use and never had a problem.
Go head, skin it. Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.

I wouldn't buy a gun from a manufacturer that says their gun is broken until you fire 500 rounds. Would you buy a car that broke down all the time until you drove 500 miles?
I heard it on the Internet, it must be true.

Five hundred is high. I use a two hundred count, which I understand to be pretty much the standard for semi-autos. I have been advised to do a 200 count shoot after changing recoil springs as well. Bear in mind that it is 200 rounds of flawless operation.

Having owned two 9mm Kahrs, I never had a problem with either one functioning. I used a form I made to keep track of the shots fired so I could track the testing.

The question that must be asked is, what are you expecting of the firearm right out of the box? going to carry it immediately? if so I'd make sure to run the hottest ammo it's rated for to ensure it'll cycle correctly (for semi autos.) I can't imagine a revolver needs many break-in to run reliably. I'm discounting things like "feel" and "trigger weight", as they will change over time regardless.

mind you I'd probably never carry a never-shot-fresh-from-the-box gun, as I believe that it should be tested for reliability first. anything man makes, he can make improperly. it would really suck to have a lemon in your holster.
