May not have to have to break them in but in order for me to have any kind of confidence in the gun (especially for carry) I want to put several hundred rounds through the gun at least.

I agree with "scruff". My Kahr PM9, out of the box, was not reliable. A stove-pipe or two every fifteen - twenty rounds. After 200-250 rounds, no more malfunctions.

With a revolver I will show a cylinder or two, clean load her up, and carry her if the revolver went bang every time I squeezed the trigger.
On automatics I clean them and start a round count....after 250 flawless shots, I feel the auto is carry qualified.

This is why I like snubbies. Put in 5, shoot them, clean it. Now it's broken in.

500 round? That's 10 boxes. At 20 bucks a box you will be spending $200 plus tax to break in a gun costing, maybe $500. This is not an acceptable quality product (at least to me)

That 500 rounds is the excuse used when they want to go shoot with their buddies.

    wife, "where are you going?
    hubby, "shooting."
    wife, "again?"
hubby, "still breaking in my new gun."
