I would have let the guy get beat and just called 911. I wouldn't have gotten involved myself because there were others involved that weren't readily visible. Sometimes there's just no solution to getting a beat down.

That's a good point about the legal risk of getting involved as a third party. In many places, including here in PA, you have the right to use deadly force to help someone who would be justified in using deadly force him or herself. Pull your gun to help an instigator or criminal, and you've got a real problem.
