Fabricating a deer hanging pole

I like your Idea and I too would put it below the frost line. Also I would weld another cross pipe on top and attach pulleys, just saying, what if you guys get several deer on the same day.

You can use it as a flag pole when not in use otherwise. Don't forget to gusset the cross beams at the vertical.

I went with a single cross member across the top.
In the twenty plus years we hunted there (4 of us), we have only gotten 2 deer on the same trip ever but the cross member could be extended to include 2 more eyebolts.

What no trees where you live? Fill the 4" with cement and it will never go anywhere. Got any bears around you? Make sure you get a 55 gallon plastic drum to catch the ticks and lice.

The closest tree now is about 80 feet away and too close to the road. Check the 2 trees down in the hunting camp thread.

I don't see the deer population increasing too much in the next few years but I suppose it could happen.
We are aging and not travelling too far off the road these days. Half mile or so.
Ticks and lice? Are you saying there are ticks and lice there? And bears? WTF? Do they shit in the woods too?
I didn't sign up for all that.
I'm hoping to shoot a deer, have it run back to the new deer hanging pole, jump.over the fence with the nail sticking out thereby eviscerating itself. Bingo. Hang the deer.

sorry but maybe i missed this part but what were your plans to tie the deer off to once hung?

I didn't show it but will weld an eyebolt onto the vertical at about 4 feet above grade.
It would serve as a tie off point or a come a long attachment depending on what I end up with.


A couple of these up top on the crossmember as well. Probably get a pulley of some kind too.

If, by chance, we go with a swivel stand, I will burn a hole in the 4" large enough for the piece of 1" pipe to go through it and weld buth ends. then the 1" threaded bar stock will slide through giving me a swivel joint.
If we go with option 2, I will likely get a couple pieces of angle iron anchored to or embedded in the concrete to place on either side of the vertical pipe, giving me an anchor point.

Deer hanging pole finally got back onto the priority list.
I was gifted a 12 foot piece of schedule 40 Xtrucoat pipe , generally used for underground natural gas lines.

I cut some 3/8" plates and put this together so far.

I did a bathroom down the street and kept a 8 foot piece of 3" galvanized steel vent pipe I tore out.
I used 5 feet of it to make the pole 17 feet high and used the 3 feet 6 inch piece as a cross member.
So far, I have this done.

Unfortunately, my welding skill has diminished considerably. Needless to say, these would never have been Xray quality. Ha.
They started to look a little better even with the 20 year old E7018.


So, I have to burn holes in the plates, attach eye bolts and pulley's on the cross member and a tie off lug about 3 feet above the bottom plate.

Harbor freight has pulley shackles for about $8 and a hand winch for $25.
I'll have to drill the concrete sidewalk to see how thick it is. I'll take 5/8" and 1/2" drop in anchors or forways.
This should get us through this year before we can do the permanent pad next spring.


I was going to weld end plates onto the crossmember but I think I'll hold off and see if I can get a 6 foot piece of 2 1/2" steel pipe to slide through that cross member.

Thank you for the thought. If I were closer , I would gladly accept.
I could see us out there this season, snow, ice, freezing rain and trying to set up snatch blocks anchored to anything solid trying to get a deer up on the pole.

I saw the hand winch on the Harbor freight site and figured it would be OK.

We always used a tree and a rope. Rope available at home depot. Tree provided by nature.
