Default New to hunting, and left-handed

    Hi folks.

Recently a friend of mine that is also an NRA certified instructor has slowly gotten me interested in hunting. I won't be ready for this season, but between now and next year I plan on doing a whole lot of training and practicing so that when season rolls around, I will be a safe, responsible, and respectful member of the hunting community.

I happen to live and will be mostly hunting in areas where only shotguns are permitted. Between now and next year (yes, I have plenty of time) I would like to start researching shotguns. Unfortunately, I am left handed, and from what I hear, decent left-handed shotguns are like unicorns. So, I have two questions:

    • Are there any left-handed hunters here that can recommend a decent right-handed shotgun with a rifled barrel under $1,000?
    • If I really should stick with a left-handed model, is the Remington 870 Express (LH model) good enough to start with?

    Thanks!

2 of the best "left handed" shotguns you'll find are the Ithaca 37 and the Browning BPS. In the case of the Ithaca, you'll need a lefty safety, but that's it.

I'm a lefty (handiness, not politics, of course), and I own a Mossberg 500. It has the safety on top so in that sense it's ambidextrous. Of course, it still ejects on the right but the spent cartridges generally don't pop out into your face like hot brass from an AR-type rifle.

I am left eye dominant and shoot long guns left handed. What Gman says is also my experience. My hunting rifles are LH bolt action, but I never had a need for a LH shotgun.
The Remington 870 is good to go, but I would look for an older gun, as the QC there has been questionable since the last takeover. If you get a brand new one, look it over very well. Bottom ejecting guns like the Browning are a good option also. The top safety on the Mossberg or Browning is really a big plus in my mind. I never cared for the trigger safety of the 870.

+1 for Ithaca 37. Been using one since 1971. Love it!

Mossberg all the way for a lefty. The tang safety location is optimal.

I started with a 500, and moved to a Browning gold, which you can swap the safety to lefty style.

I have a BPS and Ithaca 37 for turkey and birds. Also an over/under. Look at an H&R slug hunter for rifled barrel. Single shot break open. You can find Rem or mossy left hands on gunbroker.

H&R ultra slug hunters are nice. Simple break action, easy to add a scope, easy to clean and maintain. Other than that, if you don't like hot shells going by your nose, any bottom eject you can get with a rifled barrel and is comfortable to shoot is the shotgun for you.
