    Yeah, but altering or replacing the firing pin will be a serious offense so criminals will be hesitant to tamper with them.

    Surely you are aware that they have been matching bullets for years? They retrieve the bullet from a victim and when they find what they believe to be the murder weapon they fire it and match the bullets, you know matching barrel grooves on the bullets and the firing pin indentations on the casing. So if that particular gun is found in your house, most likely you are the perp.

    If I'm not mistaken, a recently retired fbi forensic guy said that most of the ballistics matching is smoke and mirrors, I believe there is a thread on it in here.
