Grease for me.
Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
I have used a Dunk-It bath for many years..never use grease..just field strip, dunk for 15 min, run a brush thru the barrel, drip and wipe near dry... and set parts in front of a fan for an hour to get rid of the last wet oily stuff. Works for me. Rifles get the same at the action end and a run-thru of Dunk it on a patch as needed.

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
Superlube on blued guns and white lihium grease on most SS. I used to use this grease with graphite, called GunSlick in it but that shit gets everywhere, and on your clothes it would not come out. Makes the gun look filthy too.
I have an old AMT Hardballer, The guy sold it to me because he couldn't get it to run, I found out the SS in the slide was the same hardness as the frame and if it wasn't lubed correctly it would gall.
I use a little bit of Never-Seez for SS on the slide and she runs like a top.

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
I've used Carb cleaner (to clean/spray gunk out) AND WD-40 (it's edible by the way) in pinch... not my lube of choice...

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
When I was young and dumb I unwittingly sprayed the action of my Sears .22 bolt gun with WD40 before going tree rat hunting.
By the end of the day that bolt was so sticky I had to take it to my uncle who pulled it from the stock and soaked it in kerosene overnight before hitting the bolt with steel wool and using a shotgun brush on a drill to clean up the boltway in the receiver.
Great for wet plugs especially on a bike, but I'll never use it on a gun again.
I'm just surprised to hear people use it, it's so light it cannot be a good long term oil.
Meh.

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
Just like with race cars, you always use the lightest oil that provides the amount of protection you need. Just because an oil is light doesn't mean it fails to protect well under load and just because it's a grease doesn't mean it protects well either......and grease has the added expense of more friction which decreases your operating envelope on guns that need slide speed to run. Temperature and it's impact on viscosity changes the envelope as well.

Re: GREASE OR GUN OIL ?
My coonan classic came with a real good oil, no grease. I've put a few thousand rounds through it now and no issues. I figure if the slide needed grease of some sort, they would have supplied it, or at least recommended a type or brand.
