In my J-frame Smith the ammo rotates every time I pull the trigger.

The humidity will ruin your ammo. Keep cool and dry. For storage ammo cans or related. PVC pipe for long term hidden storage.

Depending on the handgun (or even rifle) that's not very good advice.
Damaging an extractor is a very real possibility and bullet setback is possible and even more likely when dropping a round directly into a chamber.
Unless a gun was designed with an extractor with enough flex to hop the rim of the cartridge case you run the real risk of damaging the gun by doing so.
Feeding from the magazine allows the rim to slide up under the extractor.
As for bullet setback, there is tension that the designer took into account when making the pistol, feeding right into the chamber and slamming the slide home onto the round can work just like a bullet puller anddrive that bullet into the case.

Now, some pistols like the Beretta 92 and the Ruger P series are made with an extractor allowing single feed if need be.
But it still cannot be good to be hopping rims with any regularity.

I agree on locked breach rifles its not good and may cause extractor problems. but on blow back and most pistols its not an issue. most are not control round feed where the rim slips under the extractor (unlike rifles) and there is no need to let the slide fly home ride it home and push the last bit to make sure the slide is fully in battery.

I think my carry ammo is over 20 years old. I still trust it.

Thanks for all the input and advise, much appreciated. For practice ammo (reloads) I will not be to concerned about date of manufacture.
For EDC I will maintain a five (5) year minimum rotation.
