Renewing a Montco concealed carry permit.

Is it acceptable to renew one's license four months before the current one expires.

No such thing as a concealed carry permit! (someone was bound to say it!)

I don't think they will renew that far in advance. And they date the new one 5yrs from the date you renew. No more , no less. Not like an automobile registration. Your new one will not be good for 5yr 4mon , so ya basically lose 4 months.

I don't think the deputies care how much time is left on your existing LTCF.
They essentially cancel your old one and issue a new one. You fill out the same paperwork (no police card check) and get a PICS check run.

I did mine in January about 2 months early because I was near the courthouse for a doctor appointment and it was convenient. They never mentioned my expiration date

If you are still concerned, I suggest a quick phone call to the sheriff.

I don't think the statute limits when you can renew, BUT, the DELCO sheriff won't if you have more than two months left, so once again the uniform process probably isn't uniform across the state.

ETA, the Montco Sheriff website makes no mention of when prior to expiration you can renew.

To be fair the Montco main page does say "gun permit" several times along with License To Carry Firearms, many sheriff websites refer to the license as a permit. In Philly you go to the Gun Permit Unit to get your License To Carry Firearms.

It doesn't matter what it says. State law doesn't give it a name, and the name given by the State Police means nothing.

In NO state does the name of the respective license/permit mean anything. The law determines what are the prohibited or regulated acts, then it determines what the license/permit exempts you from.

PA's LTCF is effectively a carry concealed permit because it does in fact permit you to carry concealed(and other things).
