Popping the cherry on my new AK
The next time I go shooting I want to take my new (to me) AK and see how she works. It's a Romanian G kit professionally rebuilt with a Nodak NDS-1 receiver and mint barrel, and I was wondering what I need to do to get her in fire ready condition. Oil, lube, cleaning or whatever. Any thoughts or suggestions?
ETA: Dry as a bone, not a drop of cosmo, absolutely clean, expertly refinished furniture. A beauty of a safe queen as is, but IMHO, it's till not a gun until it goes boom.Last edited by str8shooter; September 14th, 2008 at 03:51 PM.

Re: Popping the cherry on my new AK
make sure the'res nothing in the barrel creating an obstruction, a few loaded mags and i'd call it good. maybe some light oil on the bolt, in the carrier and alittle on the rails.
then have at it.it's only metal, we can out think it....

Re: Popping the cherry on my new AK
Pass a patch with CLP down the barrel and then dry-patch it to remove the excess. Oil the bolt, the bolt carrier where it contacts the rails, the rails, and very lightly oil the FCG. Don't dump a ton of oil on the firing pin, just a scant drop from behind where the part that gets smacked by the hammer sticks out. The piston doesn't need much in the way of attention, but don't forget to take care of the outside of your AK as needed to avoid oxidation.
Personally, I'd feel more comfortable headspacing it before shooting it, but that's up to you.

Re: Popping the cherry on my new AK
Thanks for some great input. I've got CLP BF, is that OK? I also have remoil, Hoppes conditioner and No. 9, something that came with an Otis kit, and a bunch of others. The gun was built by a well reviewed AK builder who specializes in building from import kits and says every gun is head spaced before leaving his shop, but I'll verify it again. Is there a short cut to doing this, do I need to buy a tool, or should I get a smithy to look at it.
