Re: Need help from the experts
First I would Thank God for not getting killed. Second I would place it in a display box. Third replace it with a newer model pistol.

Re: Need help from the experts
HMM Some thoughts. I have a bunch of those 125 gr bullets to use up. Even at the 7.2 gr. Max for A#5 I can't get to the 105,000 pf for .38 Spec! I guess I'll just shoot 'em up in my Mod 627. Too bad, the bullets themselves are a really nice truncated cone and very true to weight! I'll be switching back to 158 gr plated probably coated since I have years of experience with my A#5 load for cast/swaged LEAD.
A new gun? Gee that sounds like a nice idea! S&W is doing a new run of its Model 67 in .38 Special +P. Bud's has one for a little below $600. I've already contacted my favorite dealer for availability and price.
On the down side I really hate to do away with my little Model 10-8! It has never let me down before and stood me very well in our local matches.

Well my curiosity got the better of me so the Model 10 will soon be on its way to S&W for evaluation and possible repair. I'll let you know what they determine.

Re: Need help from the experts
I had a customer walk in yesterday with an older Smith model 640 in .357
It had 3 bullets lodged in the bbl, all factory loaded 125gr JHPs
I had to drill the cores out in the mill to collapse the rounds and drive them out.
The gun got test fired with .357 ammo, survived with no visible damage.

So have you even seen or even heard of a condition as shown in the photos attached to the original post? I'm really curious about it, I can think of no reason for the cylinder stop notch to blow or wear out like that. Especially in such a neat pattern!
BTW I did get the new Model 67. Right now I rate it as OK. Trigger needs some TLC and I do not like the frame mounted firing pin. I prefer the hammer mounted. Oh well maybe it'' grow on me after 5 or 10 thousand rounds.

Re: Need help from the experts
I have seen plenty of blown apart cylinders but never one quite like that.

That is not an unusual failure with a six shot smith and an over pressure round. Ebay a cylinder. Make sure its the same style ejector star. Use your old star and it will be timed correctly. Colt offset the notch. They also pointed that out in advertising. Great thing it wasn't enough to blow the top strap off.
