Default How would you feel if your FFL...

Wanted to check your transfer (rifle) for a permanently affixed muzzle device?

Im currently dealing with a situation where I bought a rifle online, a police trade in A2 carbine. In my mind its a great deal on an a-typical rifle. I would consider it unlikely to find a similar deal any time soon. I was very excited to pick it up this evening after work, then I get a call.

My FFL doesnt see evidence that the muzzle device is permanently affixed. Im currently waiting for him to call back with results. He is putting my rifle in a vise and using a reaction rod and barrel wrench to attempt to remove the muzzle device.

I did not ok this. The vendor did however, who I already paid for the rifle, and he said if he doesn't check it he would have to just send it back.

Now I could tell from the photos it was a 14.5" bbl with a longer muzzle device, to bring it to sixteen. I just assumed it was permanent, i mean, why else would you even bother with the longer device.

Perhaps Im out of line, but I dont feel too great about this development. I feel that the FFL is going above and beyond what is required from him.

I half expect to get a call telling me he snapped my barrel indexing pin wrenching on the MD, using the reaction rod.

Its been over an hour already of waiting for an update. Not how I expected my day to go.

I'd tell him not to touch it until he shows me the problem.

If he breaks it, I'd say he bought it.

^ ^ ^ This. If it is broken while in his hands, he is (or at least should be) responsible for the damages.

What's his plan? To just force it enough that the pin or weld breaks loose and say "see i told you so"? Of course with enough torque it will spin....

I called him back and he told me he had it in a vise and couldn't budge it with a reasonable amount of force. (Your guess is as good as mine, what he considers reasonable when wrenching on someone else's rifle.)

However, still unsatisfied he had a gunsmith look it over and the smith found what he thinks are, not one but two welds, so he is now comfortable to call my muzzle device permanent.

I can pick it up this evening. Im relieved, but I'm still sour over the whole situation. I may suggest that he apply for a position with ATF.

I'd be upset with the FFL and the vendor. The FFL had no business trying to test the muzzle device to see if it was removable and could have potentially damaged your rifle. The vendor has no business or right giving the FFL permission to do anything to the rifle since it's technically your property since you paid for it. Inspect the rifle very carefully for any scratches, nicks or dings the FFL may have caused while acting like a jackass. I'd be tempted to refuse delivery and demand another rifle and I certainly wouldn't do business with the FFL or vendor ever again. Both the dealer and vendor were out of line in my opinion
