Walmart employee going way too far for one box of .380
I bought an S&W BG 380 when they were doing the rebate last month. I decided to buy a box of factory ammo while I was at Wallyworld to see if I would shoot the thing enough to justify buying dies for it.
As I am checking out the guy cards me whatever here is my ID, then he starts scanning it and typing things into his register. I ask him what he is doing, and he says that I must not buy a lot of ammo (true I load almost all of what I shoot) because the federal law changed in April and they have to record everyone's info for every ammo purchase. I immediately take my ID back and tell the clerk that there is no such law and that he needs to delete/void whatever he just did with my ID. He starts lecturing me about how he doesn't understand why I need 50 rounds at a time and how he should be doing a background check for my purchase not just logging it. I ask to speak to a manager, and she was conveniently on her meal break.
So I leave the other two items I was going to purchase on the counter and walk out. I get in my truck call Wal*Mart corporate and tell them what happened, and the guy is shocked and immediately puts me on the phone with his supervisor. They will apparently be investigating the guy for fraud and offered me three years of LifeLock for free because the guy could have been trying to steal my identity.
I thanked the supervisor and got all the information for LifeLock confirmed, but I told him that he was likely just some anti-gunner.
Holy Shit I can't go anywhere without attracting some moron who just wants to push my asshole button.

Good for you for following through.
I bought 9mm at my local wally world about a month ago. same reason as you - new to caliber and not reloading for it yet.
No id was required during the sale."It seems that the Constitution is more or less guidelines than actual rules"

I was in Ephrata last week, didn't buy anything but over heard a sale happening. Guy buying was questionable as to being over 21. Clerk asked to see ID, didn't do anything with it, but look at it.

Local Walmart I assume? I'm curious. I have never had that happen to me if so. I will be watching next time to see if they ask for ID.

The last time I had a clerk do something that pissed me off, I walked straight to the customer service desk and asked to speak to a manager. The OP isn't clear if he asked for the manager while he was still with the asshole or not. A store that size is going to have more than one person of management rank on hand.

Congrats on stopping whatever scam he was trying. The only question I ever had was the 'pistol or rifle?' question for 22lr.

Re: Walmart employee going way too far for one box of .380
You were correct there my only purpose at that moment to speak to the manager was to save the sale so I didn't have to make another stop for my ammo at Dunhams or drive to Target for my better half's shampoo she asked for. I have found most managers will try to defend their staff but corporate will throw them under the bus every chance they get.

Re: Walmart employee going way too far for one box of .380
I bought ammo at the Greensburg location last week.
He asked for ID.
I said, "Sorry, not giving you my ID - you're not swiping it, you can put the ammo back I don't want it."
Him: Oh, no we don't swipe it - just need to confirm the birth date. New policy. (gestures to sign up on the glass)
Me: OK, sure, I don't have a problem SHOWING it to you.
I assume it's a store policy - not corporate. Haven't seen the same thing anywhere else.
The "age" thing is nothing new, they just ask for a date of birth to plug in to comply with law for selling "handgun ammo".
Most employees don't even ask - they just make something up when they know you are "old enough".
I rarely get asked the birth date thing or the "handgun or rifle" question.
If I got lectured by some faggy little liberal over buying ammo, I guaran-damned-tee you I'd find out his name and have a nice talk with several levels of management.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!
