Cut my barrel or build one for Remington 700
Hey all. I have been kicking around the idea of a shorter barrel for my Remington 700 police model. Right now it's at 26 inches. Should I cut it down to 20. Or should I get a custom barrel ie Kreiger, Shilen etc. If I cut it down I would thread the end for either a muzzle break or flash hider. Anyone have experience with any of this. Recommend some places to have it down. Or just say f it and keep it at 26.

What is your reason for wanting to cut it down? I prefer a long barrel myself. 308?

I prefer handy, shorter carbines in general. How does the Remy barrel shoot? If it is giving you good accuracy, I say cut it down. I maybe would go 22 in though depending on what you want it for.

If you want accuracy out of it I'd get a new barrel. Remington doesn't make a quality barrel IMO, at least none I have impress.(especially the barrel on my 700)

If you cut 6" off the barrel, using the same ammo, you'll give up about 135 FPS at the muzzle.
Not saying don't cut the barrel, just something to consider while making the decision.

Re: Cut my barrel or build one for Remington 700
I eventually want to go hunting with it. I know longer barrels are great for distance but honestly I don't know when I will ever even shoot over 600 yards. It shot about 1-1 1/2 moa and that was only because the scope that came with it broke so it was alot of guesswork. Its the heavy barrel so I thought it shot great. And could anyone recommend their go to aftermarket barrel.

How much do you want to spend?
Bartline, Kreiger, Shilen, Benchmark, Pac-Nor, Criterion
Dont worry about barrel length too much if you are hunting with this set up and knowing what hunting and shooting distance you will encounter. If you want longer range shooting, build/buy a different gun around that idea.
18" Bartline took me out to 800yd with MOA results using 175 SMK.
At 900yd the projectiles were at trans-sonic speed and all over the place. So 800 was the limit on the gun/ammo.
Im assuming you have a local smith ready to do the work?
Ask them what they prefer for barrels. Some guys wont touch brand "X" or "Y".
Just like car guys, everyone has there most loved and most hated lolHGW, llc ~ Title 1 & NFA sales/manufacturing ~ Transfers - Title 1 $20 - NFA $50
