Re: Strange encounter at diner with family: what would you do?
Unfortunately, the stigma of pedophile of course pops up, or the mistrust because "thats something that we just don't do" comes immediately to mind. However, it was an innocent gesture, especially in front of the adults at the table and thankfully you reminded calm. I don't think that your dad didn't react properly to the situation, and should not feel any guilt or remorse. It was an innocent meeting and everything appears to have gone smoothly

Re: Strange encounter at diner with family: what would you do?
I think as soon as I saw the bag I would have told the man to stop right there and move away from our table. If the person was in the mindset of complimenting on how well your daughter behaved he should have done so by just saying so without reaching for anything in a bag. I would have talked with the manager and would have explained to him/her how creepy that is someone would approach my family and zero in on my 4 year old daughter. This is abnormal behavior. You handled it as best you could being taken by surprise but I believe that is what the man's experienced intentions were. This was not the first time he's done that kind of thing. Who else was he sitting with at the diner? Maybe I act like a Mama Grizzly but unfamiliar grown men should not be approaching anywhere near a young child nor discussing any matters that concern them. Yes, I would have been firm with him about backing away.
Corruption is the default behavior of government officials. JPC

Might not be useful.

While the MIT guys' tongue-in-cheek conclusion -- "the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC" -- maybe goes a few steps too far, their study at least shows that foil helmets fail at, and even counteract, their intended purpose. That, or the students are aliens who fabricated these results in an effort to get you to take your perfectly functional helmet off.

So, and then the question is do you actually let your kid eat the lollipop?
