That said, I would have had the child graciously accept the lollipop and then once the guy was gone taken it from her and explain why we don't accept candy from strangers. Doing it that way saves creating a scene and allows the man to keep his pride, but also protects your child.
    This ^^^^^^^^^ maybe the man just lost a child or grandchild and this his way of coping.

    My wife knows where to sit also... I had my daughter at 8 years old trained not to take that seat... Today they just approach the table and go left or right on either side of me.
