Re: Photobucket Demands $400 Ransom to Release Photos
Yeah, I think the days of free third party hosting are numbered. I've had a SmugMug account for years for storing photos for years. The only reason I ever started using Photobucket was for ease of third party hosting. The Photoimage site is very easy to use for that. No account needed, just upload a pic, click on the "hotlink for forums" tab, then paste it on a forum. I'm sure that's going to go away soon though, too.

Re: Photobucket Demands $400 Ransom to Release Photos
Facebook works. One of the reasons I still have a Facebook is the thousands of pictures I have on there. It's fast and easy to use. No pop up ads. The Albums are easy to organize.
Even if you don't want to do the Facebook thing, it's easy enough to set up a fake Facebook account just for pictures.

Re: Photobucket Demands $400 Ransom to Release Photos
The issue isn't totally about individual photos being "safe" - consider the millions of forum threads filled with helpful posts on how to fix things or reviews of products... all rendered useless with the photos now removed.
It's an immensely dickish move on the part of Photbucket.
I wish them nothing but misery and plagues of flies and mysterious blisters on their genitals for what they have done.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Photobucket Demands $400 Ransom to Release Photos
I'd have either marked the accounts read only (no more updates) until after some agreement was reached, or moved accounts to slower servers and a lower bandwidth connection. Yea it'd cause some consternation, but as you said it would break good chunks of the internet, and screw over people who aren't even involved (namely those looking to fix something without taking it to someplace that will cost them a shitload of money.)

Re: Photobucket Demands $400 Ransom to Release Photos
As I suspected, I haven't been affected because I am a paid subscriber .... YET, but I will when my current subscription ends ... got an email about it today.
Are you worried about your account?
Don't be! All of our Plus Members are grandfathered in for 3rd Party Hosting until the end of your current subscription. However, if you want to beat the crowds and upgrade to the Plus 500 now, we'll give you six months on us!
Worried about cost? Rest assured, the price will be prorated depending on your subscription!

There is a new add on for chrome and fire fox just out that will circumvent the PB issue.
