Buck shot is for deer, and bird shot is for anything flappy with feathers.

Many people consider #4 Buck to be the best SD shell.

27 or so .22 cal pellets does some serious damage.

Birdshot at close range will make a pretty neat hole in whatever it hits.

I get it but they are both called #4. sort of confusing. i used #4 high brass to hunt turkeys. Is the differnce just the size of the shot or is there a Metallurgical (sp?) differnce in the shot ?

Size. Both are generally lead. Although shot can also be steel or other non-toxic metals. I've not heard of buckshot being made of anything other than lead, but it certainly may exist. The larger commonly referred to a #4 "BUCK" The smaller is generally called 4 "SHOT"

The terms "shot" and "buck" make the difference

it certainly is fun Vs targets. nothing like ending a day of missing the mark with a nice splatter of "i hit every damned part of the target, frame, ground, all of it"
and it is cheap. i have about 300rnd of winchester universal? it's like $25 for a hundred.

From what I've read bird shot up close will leave a 1-2 in crater but usually doesn't penetrate farther. Sounds like it would suck but not always kill.
