Preaching to the choir here but this makes no sense. How is this going to make anyone safer?

How far did the police escort you? Did they stick around till you got a rental car and watch you drive away (after taking your tag number). Did anyone think someone could unpack their firearm in the car and come back in?

Ok, given what has happened, what should they do? They can just follow the old policy or change it based on the events. If after all these precautions you still hand over the gun to the passenger, then nobody is any safer. I am confident, as another member pointed out, transportation of firearms with the passenger will be banned. As is, we are pretty much "land locked" because even driving out of state isn't an option because you never know what the laws are.

The bulk of airport and airline safety measures are security theatre.

You're not supposed to use TSA locks on the case that contains your firearm. YOU are the only person who is supposed to be able to open the case.

They are idiots. It doesn't stop someone from walking back in and shooting. It's pointless.

Correct. That's only my luggage lock.

Now they treat you like a criminal. When I checked in the other day at Pittsburgh Airport, the counter gal got a bit shitty about it when I declared that I was checking a firearm. She says, loudly and with a smarmy attitude, "You're going to have to open that up and prove it's unloaded! We're going to zip tie your bag shut and when you get to phoenix, you'll have to go to our office there to get your back and you may be escorted out by police!" This drew the attention of the big crowd around me.
What airline? I flew Spirit from Detroit twice in the past two months...first to Atlanta and back for the NRA convention, then just last week to Orlando and back. No issues in Detroit or Atlanta. Orlando, the girl at the gate insisted that I attach a tag to the knob of my Gunvault lockbox. (Also: in the passenger cabin, the flight attendants were cracking jokes about North Carolina and bathrooms, I guess a reference to that transsexual bathroom law? Really a bunch of weirdos there.) But, in any event, no zipties, no special retrieval, etc. Bag was on the carousel in all locations, like any other bag.

Oddly, I've always had to go to the 'oversize luggage' carousel when arriving at Pittsburgh -- the last time being January, when I flew on Delta. No one official ever actually mentioned this ahead of time, it's like it's something you just have to know. Otherwise, no issues on that flight.
