When I think of finicky ammo/gun combinations, the 22 mag is pretty much a given. So I really don't have an answer for you. I think you just have to try some brands and first see what is the most accurate in your particular rifle. That said, I would probably pick a heavier bullet and a moderate velocity for the most accuracy. Rimfires tend to have variation from one production date to the next run. So if you find a dandy, I would try to stock up on that lot number.

Putting a hole in a groundhog's head always gives it a problem. Use something that will make a hole.

I have always had the best luck with the Winchester Sliver Box 40grn JHP. If they are not available then the CCI 40grn JHP is the next best imo.

My 22wmr rifle seems to like the Hornady VMax 30 gr. And they do a good job on groundhogs.

I've used either of the above with good success.

I have had great luck with 50 grain federal game shock. It does a number on groundhogs, plenty of penetration. Even gut shots put them right down.

I have the Savage Model 93 VFSS, stainless bull barrel with a no frills bushnell 3x9, and it is quite a shooter, It absolutely loves the Winchester SuperX Silver box 40 gr jacketed hollowpoints, I've found it does not like the lighter faster loads such as offered by CCI

I have bought dozens of assorted boxes to work this rifle out and the Super X is the best for me, luckily I have several handguns to chew up what is left, they mostly prefer the heavier stuff also.

Interesting while on Winchesters site I see they are now selling a subsonic 45 gr load WMR, I have thought for years why nobody marketed this as I shoot a shitload of 22 short CB's in my backyard, I will source some and see how quiet/accurate they are

This out of both my Ruger Single Six and Taurus 94 does a fine job on the hogs
