Default Philadelphia Airport Travel with Firearms

Anyone know lately the difficulty of traveling with firearms in PHL lately? Does it cause a long delay in checking in? I want to take two handguns to PHL and then on return trip from PHL on American Airlines. I know the process for informing the ticket counter, carrying unloaded in a hard case, and signing tag inside the locked case but I wanted to know if this will cause a delay.

Three weeks ago it added about 5-10 minutes to my check-in time between filling out the form, locking it all up, and getting the OK from "the man behind the curtain" that I could head to security - and then spend 1½ hours waiting to board.

    Easy peasy.

Last time I traveled with my firearm it was quite easy but that was about 2 years ago. I will be going to Colorado from Phila,PA on Frontier. I don't remember, do they give you the form at the desk when you declare your firearm?

Yes, they provide the form - without a single eyelash batted. It was (quite pleasantly) a non-event.

Just make sure gun is in a locked case and ammo is also in a separate locked case. Ammo should also be in original boxes or organized case. If you are checking a pistol having your LTCF is also useful in case the police decide to "question" you. Generally though flying out of PHL with a firearm is just fine. Even though it is legal to do it (in a highly technical sense) don't try to do the same out of EWR, BWI, JFK, or LGA.

I will have a hard pistol case with two guns locked with non tsa locks placed in a larger bag that will be locked. Ammo will be in big locked bag the same as gun as only allowed one bag and TSA says it is ok.

I flew to Vegas in April and was suprised how easy it was. Check in was faster than waiting in the regular line. I was told to wait 15 mins for TSA to come out if any issues. When I landed in Vegas they bring your bag to the AA kiosk in the airport to retrieve your bag. Very simple process.

Flying American at Philly airport, where is the "man behind the curtain" located relative to the AA ticket counter? Am I escorted by someone to get there?

I checked in at the counter - put it on the scale, filled out the tag, locked it all back up. Then the agent and I - on our respective sides of the counter - walked a little ways down the counter (about 6 stations?) to where the conveyor behind them goes through the black rubber curtain into Neverland, whereupon they got the attention of the great and powerful Oz before passing the bag through. Wait 5 minutes for Oz to give the green light and carry on with my day.

To answer your question directly: yes, you are escorted with your bag to the curtain, which is behind the check-in counter.
