inexpensive quality pistol
ok here it goes ,my dad wants to get a few high point pistols(3 one for him,one for my mother, and one for myself just in case you want to know why he want three of them
I personally do not like the shape of the highpoint,i think its too clunky, probrodly seriously lacking in the area of ergonomics, and lastly its just well horrid looking
the metal internals they are made out of (i forget what material they are made of but i have heard they are prone to breakage)
i really think he wants to get the high points is because he wants something cheap pricewise
I need something you can get for a low cost (in 9 mm) that would be ideal for home defense and concealed carry(and plinking)
any suggestions

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
The Hi-Points are pretty clunky, but from what I've seen of them they seem to be pretty reliable. For the money they're definitely better than the pot metal Jennings, Davis, Bryco stuff.

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
Think quality used handgun.
The only way I would consider it is if money were really tight and I NEEDED a handgun immediately for protection against a threat.
Otherwise, if money were tight and I didn't have anyone who was actively threatening me or my family, I'd keep saving.
I have accumulated a handful of reliable firearms on a very tight budget. It takes a while, but I'd rather wait than risk my life with a product that was made to be inexpensive.
Note:
I DO own a Hi-Point 995 carbine.
It's a wonderfully reliable, ugly, solidly-built piece of crap that has NEVER given me any trouble while punching holes in paper.
Sound confusing? It is.
I like it as much as I don't like it. It does EXACTLY what I purchased it for, but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable knowing it (or any Hi-Point) was my wife's only chance of stopping an attack.
OK fellow Hi-Point owners, lemme have it!
I've just said something bad (and good too - remember?) about Hi-Points!
It's ALMOST as bad as saying something bad about a Glock!I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
9x18 makarov. dont confuse it with 9mm luger.
makarovs are great reliable guns, and for ease of use, reliability and maintenance, they are a great first handgun.
plus they can be had in the sub $150 range

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
Roger that. If you are not absolutly wedded to the 9x19, 9x18 Makarov's can be had pretty cheap. Aim surplus has Hungarian Maks for around $130. The CZ 52's are good pistols as well but in a odd ball caliber. But ammo is still available and reasonably priced. check out http://www.summitgunbroker.com/ As was said before you do have a lot of options.

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
J&G Sales has PA-63 pistols in 9X18 Makarov caliber on sale for $109...they have an alloy frame and are a bit lighter than the true, all steel Makarovs.

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
Like another member said, Some of the big box stores (Gander Mountain) have a nice selection of used pistols. When I was looking, I saw some used at Gander which were reasonably priced compared to new. I would rather pony up the dough to get a used quality pistol rather than a new marginal quality one.

Re: inexpensive quality pistol
I picked up a used Magnum Research Baby Eagle .40 cal last year for $300. It's a full size so it's pretty heavy, but they make a compact. I've put about 700 rounds of cheap wolf ammo through it without a problem. My Safety got stuck once in the fire position, but the gunsmith told me the firing pin was installed upside down by the previous owner. I've put about 300 rounds through it since then without any problems.
