I'd say the cutoff was ride the lightning, maybe master of puppets. I'd say their best stuff was written by dave mustaine.
I was never truly a metallica fan (SLAYER RULES!), but they did have some solid stuff. After they did the napster thing, that was the final straw for me.

I'll give them up to ...and justice for all and that's it. Dave was a major driving force behind their sound and could have survived without him but when Cliff died that was the end of Metallica, IMHO.
