Default No sheriff, county can't issue LTCF. Options?

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Blair County’s processing of issuing new and renewed licenses to carry firearms is on hold for lack of a sheriff. So are real estate transactions from sheriff sales.

The department is still accepting and processing the gun carry permit applications, Chief Deputy Holly Garner said Thursday.

But for lack of a sheriff signature, the department has about 350 applications it has yet to answer. In addition, about 20 real estate transactions from sheriff sales are on hold.

“We can’t do anything about it at this time,” commissioners Chairman Bruce Erb said Thursday. “We’re not the party that needs to take action.”

    ...

“If someone’s (gun carry) permit has expired, we’re advising them not to carry at this time,” Garner said.

So, I understand there is a "grace period" after the license expires, but what options are there? We went from "walk in, pay, leave with license." to "Walk in, pay, wait 45 days, petition the court..."

Previous sheriff retired in January, awaiting election (in November) for a new one. This is where it gets interesting; top deputy was acting in the place of the Sheriff, while also campaigning for the position. Due to (my opinion only) politics, a Sexual Harassment claim was made against the acting sheriff, and he was removed from the position, by the county commissioners. Next in line steps up and is running the office. However, as she is only "acting sheriff" and the governor has appointed someone to the position, she doesn't have the authority to sign a LTCF. The appointed guy can't either, as he has never been confirmed by the senate. It sounds to me like they haven't been able to issue a LTCF since January.

So is this McClure dude still the acting sheriff?

I don't see what the big deal is. We had a similar issue where the sheriff resigned due to legal issues. The deputy took over as the sheriff until he was eventually elected. In the meantime he was the effective sheriff. He processed LTCF's including mine.

Mine is good until 2020, so I hope we have a sheriff by then.

Elk Co.'s previous elected sheriff, a total POS, resigned a little over halfway through his second term, but pretty much stopped working early in his first term. His chief deputy, worthless in her own way, assumed all of the duties, including LTCF issue/reissue, sheriff's sales of property, and process swerving. But it didn't all get done and the backlog from the resigned sheriff was a huge mountain to chisel away.

However, there was no interference by the Co. commissioners, the state, nobody. No replacement was appointed by the governor. Life went on for another year +. LTCFs were issued and reissued. Mine was one of them.

Sounds like your county is getting a prison pounding. Is there no attorney in the county who would like to protect the 2A and earn a name in the community for himself?
    Some people just plain suck.
