Default I need someone to thread my AK barrel in NEPA

Looking for advice. My gunsmith is going under the knife so will be out of commission.

I have an AK with previously ground down threads from the preban days. I know it is wide enough to be threaded to 1/2-28. I'm looking for someone locally to do it. I'm expecting it to be done with a die and not have them remove the barrel.

If anyone knows anyone let me know!

I would suggest just doing it yourself, it is much easier than you would think and the needed tools won't cost much more than having a smith do it.

I'm super nervous about doing it myself.

    Is there anyway to practice?

I'm worried I'd fuck it up ... also I would worry that maybe my barrel needs a slight shaving off to make it the right width, but I know nothing.

Yep, buy some black iron pipe, cut it into sections (or thread it and cut off the threaded section, rinse, and repeat)...don't forget cutting oil and to back the thread off to clean the metal out of the die and threads every few turns.

After the pipe, the barrel will be a breeze!

Hey if you screw it up, slice an inch off the barrel and try again.

I but the bullet and bought the threading kit from CNC warrior. I called John but they wouldn't do it because the barrel couldn't be put on a lathe.

I'd love to practice on the pipe first. I'm just wondering tho, if I practice on the pipe is that going to unsharpen my die too much for when it's time to thread the barrel?

I've done 6 rifles on one die (4 of them AK's) and its still plenty sharp, a pipe is going to be much softer than a rifle barrel. The first gun I did was a beater arisaka, because I wanted to practice one first. I would suggest doing an actual gun, something like a cheap .22. Since you got a 1/2x28 die you'll probably have a hard time finding a .30 caliber rifle with a barrel skinny enough to practice on. If you use a pipe you likely won't get the threads on straight, not that it really matters.

Just go slow, use plenty of oil, and remember to back out at every 8th of a turn so you clear all the material from the die.

I'm curious why you settled on 1/2x28 threads on an AK unless the AK is chambered in 223 or 5.45?

I know a lot of AK guys that did their own barrel threading...my only concern would be how concentric are those DIY kits? I'd really be concerned if you are planning on using it with suppressor. If it's just for a brake/comp that's one thing, but anything suppressed, I'd pay someone even if I had to ship firearm to have it done properly.
