What would you do if someone tried to grab your gun

This is probably close to the best you can hope for.

A knife sounds ideal. I have my doubts that anyone would be able to remove a knife and utilize it while at the same time fighting to keep the gun from being forcibly removed.
Not that it isn't good to have options and having the knife is certainly a step above not having one.

Jen nailed it. Carry a knife weakside and practice practice practice drawing it weakside. I usually carry a spring assisted knife.

Many years ago while on duty a drunk tried to grab my Pistol from a Safariland level three holster. His first mistake was touching me on my strong side. He was quickly hip tossed to the ground. Since we were outside of our most finest dive bars, the bouncer grabbed the guy by the legs. I Tasered the guy as my partner showed up and peppered sprayed him. Drunk guy wound up in jail. My holster and my training both worked.

This is my plan, YMMV depending on your training and experience. My plans for an OC grab is to fight and then draw down on the attacker while making distance. If they advance after that, I will do what needs to be done. Then I will lawyer up and shut up! IANAL

All sounds like solid advice, and good point that you don't truly know what you'll do until if/when it were to actually happen. I definitely want to take some sort of retention training in the near future to at least build up some motor skills

Stab them with your knife while they are paying attention to your gun. Always carry a knife your non gun hand can reach. If you carry and shoot right handed keep your knife so your left hand can be used to defend yourself from a disarming attack. If someone is trying to disarm you and they don't identify themselves as a police officer you can be certain they are looking to do you or others harm with your firearm. This is why a retention holster is so important when open carrying. Stab at the attackers hand or arm so they withdraw it. If it's that critical of a situation stab low in the abdominal area, below the belt. Immediate profuse bleeding will make an attacker back off quickly and the loss of blood will weaken them. I prefer a fixed blade knife carried on my left side that has at least a 3" blade. 4" is better. If someone is trying to disarm you, you are already fighting for your life. This is the way I conduct myself when open carrying and your opinions and ideas may be different.

I watched a SELF DEFENSE show on SPORTSMAN channel. In such a scenario they don't advise stabbing the abdomen, but rather slashing the muscles in the arm that is being use to commit the offense. That will immediately repel the threat and disable the attacker. A jab to the stomach may take some time to be effectual.
