Re: What's a good 357 Mag round?
Thanks for the information everyone. The chance of being attacked may be slim, however it is not impossible. My wife and I had a close call several years ago, and I like to be prepared. When funds allow, I will get a 44 mag. I had one a few years ago and got rid of it because the thing weighed a ton. I wish I held on to it.

Can always go for a 10mm auto as well. Or bear spray. But it's not a grizzly so a hot 357 should do the trick one would think.

Re: What's a good 357 Mag round?
125 grain .357 has always been the recommendation until all the confusing new-fangled stuff competing for market share. Hit the bear square in the nose and he will leave you alone. One thing about bears. They can and do ignore pain. Saw a thing on TV recently where a bear was scooping a bee hive in a fallen tree and the bees were stinging the hell out of him. When he was satisfied, he rolled on his back on the ground attempting to relieve whatever he was feeling. From that, I take it that if a bear has decided you need to be taught a lesson for some reason, he will ignore gunshots. Your gonna need to incapacitate him just in case the noise and the being struck by bullets doesn't result in his stopping the charge. Never hike alone. Can you outrun your wife? ETA: More likely a charge from a female with cubs nearby.

If I thought I could be attacked by a black bear, I'd have my Ruger Redhawk .41 magnum, loaded with Remington 210 grain JSP @ 1300 ft/s.
If I only had my .357 magnum, I'd load it with 180 gr. Hardcast slugs.

I'd suggest one of the below two links, Underwood makes good stuff:

Re: What's a good 357 Mag round?
The 180 cast is the smart choice, either Buffalo Bore or Underwood would be fine. A 357 mag 180 grain has a sectional density of .202 compared to a 125 at .140. Sectional density determines penetration. There is a reason African dangerous game hunters always use "solids." A bullet must 1) hit where it is pointed 2) penetrate deep enough to hit vital organs regardless of angle and 3) if it expands, that is a plus. The priority of importance is in that order.
