    Default sportsman's guide

the latest sportsman's guide shooters catalog offers a kit to convert a 10/22 rifle into a charger pistol...i alerted them to the federal violation involved in converting a rifle action to a pistol and asked if legal had reviewed this product...i was told it had been withdrawn. i guess lots of sharp-eyed folks called them on this one.

I wasn't aware of that law, but I thought the actions of the 10/22 rifle and charger are the same?

Nor was I, unless the OP was referring to the possibility that someone might try to install the rifle stock on the action while the pistol barrel was still attached. In a related case, the Supreme Court handed BATF's ass to them on a similar matter with the Contender pistol (re: United States v. Thompson/Center Arms Co.). One germane point not mentioned in the link is the Contender is single-shot and the 10-22 is self-loading.

Otherwise, a pistol stock on a rifle shouldn't be a problem since pistols don't have a maximum barrel length specification.

Any weapon made from a rifle is an SBR if the overall length is under 26", even if the converted weapon has no buttstock, and even if the barrel is still 16" or more. Manufacturing a pistol requires a virgin receiver.

    hi low capacity,
it seems we are indeed neighbors...maybe we can get together for a cup of coffee sometime...to answer your question, the 10/22 charger and 10/22 rifle share the same action, but as gunlawyer001 mentioned, the receiver must be virgin to make a pistol; any length barrel may be used on a pistol, but to maintain it's status as a rifle, the barrel must be at least 16" long with (i believe) a total overall length of 26", so putting a pistol stock on a rifle is still a no-no unless the overall length provision is met.

the thompson-center rifle kit decision eventually went in our favor allowing one to convert a pistol into a rifle maintaining the legal ability to revert back to a pistol...if you use an encore receiver originally manufactured as a rifle to create a pistol you're violating a biggie...

It's sold out because it's a federal felony if you install it. (legally exactly the same as if you made a MG out of your 10/22)

I'm sure someone got fired over it.
