The birds head grip is necessary to achieve the minimum OAL.

Doubtful. It doesn't reach the criteria of a long gun.

Instead of this thing, I'm going to put the same bird's head grip onto a regular 500 with an 18.5" barrel. 4.5" more makes it less cool (funny how that works for guns but not for other things), but I know exactly where it stands legally...

As for the having tried it question, I've previously had a 500 setup in the way I'm describing. It was very fun to shoot, but you're going to have to practice with it a lot before trusting as a defensive weapon, and even then you're probably better off with a regular shotgun with a 18"+ barrel. The bird's head grip doesn't give that "this thing's gonna snap my wrist" feeling you get with standard pistol grips, but it's not as easy to handle as a fully stocked shotgun either. Seeing the new Shockwave got me interested in it again, and if the law becomes clearer in terms of "is this thing legal to keep loaded in our vehicles in PA" and the answer is yes... I'll get the 14" version at that time. Until then, 18.5" will be fine.

I can confirm from personal experience with the very same bird's head grip they are shipping on the Shockwave, the bird's head is vastly superior to a standard pistol grip. The grip has been out for years, Shockwave also provided instructions in how to construct the 14" non-NFA firearm yourself also for several years. So, this not a shotgun is nothing new... but it's fantastic that Mossberg is making it this way from the factory.

If only PA's laws were more clear as to the legality of this thing in a loaded in a vehicle type situation...

I usually feel like we're pretty free here in PA, but this thing falls into a very dark grey area, and that really sucks.

Interesting that that duck head grip gives a better feel than a more structured grip.

According to what I've read, yes it will. The length/shape of the grip is what puts it into the long gun class.

So I can make one out of a 870 (legally) if I want to?

I might pick one of these up for sporting clays.
