Advice for new shooter
Hi
I'll be moving to Pittsburgh this summer, and am very interested in learning shoot.
Any advice on training courses and a good range/club to join would be greatly appreciated. I am looking at joining Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club.
I was planning to start with a full-size 9mm pistol and a 10/22 rifle.
Thanks

Re: Advice for new shooter
I hear the Sportsmen's club down in Deer Lakes is pretty nice. I was actually invited there myself recently. I believe they cost $50 for the first year or something.
Deer Lakes is in the NE corner of Allegheny County bordering Butler County. I'm probably going to take them up on it because state ranges are getting to be a PITA. You can always get a $30 range permit and go up to SG203 if you want. I've had a permit there 4 years in a row and I'm ready for a change of scene.
Youre much better off with a large reputable club if youre looking for mentors. i also hear Deer Lakes is very no-nonsense and holds their members to a high standard of behavior which includes no swearing....because it's a youth friendly club. They do however, also have a bar on premises. In spite of being a regular drinker, I dont really approve of that. But I guess it is a good place to meet up with potential mentors.Last edited by FJW; April 27th, 2017 at 08:19 PM.

Advice?
Your pistol skills should only be adequate enough to get you to your rifle.
The guys at the Monroeville club will point you in the right direction, trust their judgment.
Many are members here.Last edited by P89; April 27th, 2017 at 08:35 PM.

Pitcairn-Monroeville is one of the best clubs in the area IMO. They frequently offer different classes and competitions that you could get involved with. Also host PAFOA group shoots. Your choice of weapons is good to start with.

Re: Advice for new shooter
I'd recommend starting with the 10/22 rifle and a Ruger MK-series .22lr pistol. This will allow you to focus on the fundamentals with less risk of developing a flinch or other bad recoil related habits. These are also the most popular rimfires out there and have tons of aftermarket support for upgrades/replacements.
Plus, you'll just need a couple magazines for each to begin competing in either NSSF Rimfire and/or rimfire divisions of Steel Challenge.
I've never been there (I know, group shoots, I need to make a trip) but I've heard good things about Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club (PMSC) and know there are several board members who are members of the club.
