Gunshot Sensors Spot Shooters Before 911

These have been around for a while, and I think that was one of the concerns that some anti politician brought up relating to the Hearing Protection Act, saying that the shot spotters wouldn't work properly if people were using suppressors. I'm not sure how true that is, especially given the source, but I'm curious how suppressors would effect the system or its accuracy.

I think some cities around here have these systems set up. I guess there's one quick way to find out...

In regards to suppressors, realistically they wouldn't be used as much as opponents of the HPA claim. The majority of crimes are done with handguns because of ease of concealibilty. If you look at the FBI stats, it backs this trend up(about 95% of violent crime). Adding a 5" to 8" can on that gun suddenly makes it a lot harder to conceal and takes away that surprise element.

Rochester, NY had a system that triangulated gun shot locations by sound in 2007 when I was a freshman at RIT. The school was some how involved in it and I remember learning about it in some orientation thing.

The manufacture of Shot Spotter says that although they have not tested the units with suppressors, but they have had shots spotted from suppressed firearms.

I'd like to know how they know direction and speed of the shooter? After the shot is fired what are these sensors detecting?
