Default Are all penetrating oils/CLPs the same?

While checking out some stuff online to learn how to properly clean my AR, I ran across a video by Hickok45 where he recommended using Ballistol. I had heard of it before, but never paid much attention to it. After looking it up, I started looking around at what other similar lubricating products are out there. As such, I have to ask, based on my initial findings, what makes Ballistol or other penetrating oils/CLPs like Deep Creep, etc. any different than plain, old WD40? And are they suitable for cleaning and lubing firearms? They claim to be right on the side of the can.

Don't you have access to a dual-column gas chromatograph, Hewlett-Packard model 5710a with flame analyzing detectors?

I've ways used CLP for just about everything until this past October when my cousin gave me a can of ballistol. I cleaned my carry guns a few months back with it and it worked really well and as of last week they were still well lubricated. My only complaint was it's smell but it's a small price to pay. WD40 is a great rust preventive but it gums up and attracts a lot of dirt internally faster then the others mentioned. I've sprayed it on cloths and wiped down the exteriors of receivers and barrels before storing rifles and it's done well. All in all I'm sticking with CLP, Ballistol, Hoppes for the barrel and I also use their lube for a few guns that like to run super wet.

I use Break Free on my AR, used it in the Army by the gallon 30 years ago. It is good stuff, you can't go wrong with that.

I use Ballistol on my pistols and mixed with water, it is great for cleaning black powder guns. It is also good for the same purposes you would use WD40 around your house or car- hinges, lawn mowers, I also spray it on parts on my chainsaws and weed trimmers.

I think the whole gun cleaner debate has reached the level of golf clubs where everything is hyped, more expensive and over advertised. It's all marketing making dummies like me try everything out.

I also mix my own version of Ed's Red and mix in some Ballistol instead of the lanolin that is recommended.

Not all the same. I have never been a fan of anything that is supposed to do the job of a lubricant and a cleaner in one product. You compromise the performance of product by expecting it to do multiple things. So I use a cleaner to clean/remove and a lubricant to lubricate. Use several difference kinds of cleaners and different lubes too. (different weights mostly) I'm not the military so I don't need to keep it simple and have one product that does several things in a mediocre fashion due to logistics and trying not to overload the brain of the grunt.

If you used different products on firearms with the same round counts, I doubt that you would see any difference in wear. Maybe not the same product but serve the same purpose.

I've used Break Free almost exclusively for the past 18 years.

Love ballistol. I use it on my guns, knives, and leather belts/holsters.
Life has a melody. Not great, not terrible.
