    I think you are probably looking at an assembler/fitter's number. The official position of the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame (you may have to remove the stocks, dependent on type). They are also usually stamped on the frame, along with the model number, under the yoke. A 629-3 serial number would be in the new format which would be three alpha characters followed by four numeric characters.
