I like the 1-8 twist of the Ruger over the 1-9 twist of the S&W, other than that I could take either one.

Both good choices the Ruger has the better twist rate as mentioned above and sports and cold hammer forged barrel, neither rifle are chrome lined. The negative with the Ruger is the front gas block is propitiatory so if they ever wanted to change to a low profile gas block and a free float barrel (which it sounds unlikely) then it will be a PITA.

If I had to choose one today I would go with the Ruger.

Ruger, change the trigger and abuse it.
They make a bazillion AR scopes, it's all in what you want on your budget.

I came into this thread, out of curiosity......

That being said... 1;9 twist rate is dumb

Proprietary anything on an ar-15 is equally dumb.

My vote is neither.... That's just me though.

    +1 for the Ruger

If your set on a big name i don't think you could go wrong with either but you may get more for your money with PSA or similar brand and you still wouldn't have to build it.

I like the Aero Precision ac-15 better than those. 1/7 twist and More milspec parts (RE and BCG) primary arms and Brownells have sales on them. A 1/9 twist is fine for most bullet weights up to about 77 grams. The SW has a melonite barrel the Ruger doesn't but is CHF. For a basic range gun all of these have been proven reliable budget options

    Yup.
I don't think there's anything one has/doesn't have that's enough to make any one of them a "better" choice than another.
It's just going to be personal preference based on some minor variances.

Which one is cheaper. Pick that one. Between those two that's about the deciding factor

I know you mean "grains". Just wanted to clarify your remarks - hope it was OK...

Here are a couple of charts showing 77 grain stability in a 1/9, 1/8, and 1/7 barrels. Obviously, if you're gonna use 77 gn bullets exclusively, 1/7 is probably the best twist rate. Yes, they work in 1/8's too, just not as well. 1/9's? Forget about using 77 gn pills, but I'm sure the 55 gn's (XM193, etc) will do just fine:
