Default Sub $1000 medium range/possible hunting rifle.

So im thinking about my next gun. I would like something reasonably accurate out past 300 yards, but that i could use to hunt with as well, so nothing super heavy. Ive not been paying attention to any of the newer rifles. I would want .308, 300win or 300wsm. I will be handloading for it and would like it for a range toy, hunting rifle when i pass my current one down to my kid. The 1000$ range would be for rifle only, could probably swing another 600 for the optic...any suggestions? I wouldnt mind something i could modify later for longer range gun.

6.5 Creedmoor. The Axis can be had for $319. Axis II for a little more...giving the Accu-trigger. Incredible set-up for the money. Want another caliber...just stay in the cartridge head dimension ball park and change barrels.

If wanting a little more serious rifle, look at the 10 LE series.

The Ruger American Predator will give you everything you need and more in either 6.5 or .308. I have it in .308 and it's an excellent high quality rifle that boasts an amazing adjustable trigger that rivals other rifles that cost 2 times or more what the Ruger does.

Ptr91 or c308 cheap mags too. Pa game commission might open big game one day. For now you won't find a better bargain.

A Remington 700 in whatever caliber you prefer is pretty timeless., It's often used to shoot out to 1000 yards, and there is an almost endless aftermarket for it.

I second this. My 700 is a tack driver. Throw it in an MDT chassis to cut down the weight a bit. Buy a 700 ADL in 308/30.06/300WM for $399 and drop it in the chassis for another $300. You've got a hell of a gun then.

I agree I would go with a 700. Here is a tactical 700 on GB with a threaded barrel. In the picture they have a scope and a suppressor on the 700. I do not believe that the rifle comes with those two items. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/634634320

My son Tom has 700 tactical with a 16.5 inch threaded barrel in 308. It is a tack driver and he does hunt with an AAC Suppressor.

If I were going to build or buy a new deer rifle I would look at the 6.5 Creedmoor. I think it is a better round then the 308.

    Just My $0.02.

I'd say 700 too simply because of all the after market support. Good platform to turn into a long range gun if you wish to at some point.
