Re: Oil Exterior Of Gun?
For pistols that I shoot weekly, I use a silicone cloth. When they do get a "real" cleaning, I will put a light coat of Breakfree CLP on the exterior. Hunting rifles that see action a few weeks out of the year will get a good wet wipe down with CLP. Breakfree even makes a "long term storage" CLP just for this purpose. Once in the middle of the winter, the entire safe gets emptied and a new layer of CLP applied. My hunting rifles all bead water or snow and it is easily wiped off at the truck or back at camp with a dry t shirt rag and then followed up with some light CLP.

Re: Oil Exterior Of Gun?
I have had good luck using Birchwood-Casey's "Barricade" wipes. They're very "wet" and I can usually use one wipe for several guns after cleaning or use. Leaves a thin film of oil, sometimes I wipe it off blued weapons after letting it sit awhile. My parkerized 1911 soaks it up like crazy, therefore drying itself

I use my own tweeked formula of eds red. Sort of a clp. I use a soft bristled paint brush to hit the exterior of the gun. Gets in all the nooks and crannies.
Go sell crazy some where else, we're all stocked up here.

Re: Oil Exterior Of Gun?
I usualy pull my guns out once a month and clean and lubricate them, also after shooting, I come straight home dissasemble and clean throughly and lubricate. I do not have many guns so it is not a problem, some people have an enough to start an army, (which I would be one of them if I had the means to) and it is to hard for them to do so. so decide if what you want.
3 in 1 oil seems to dry faster than some oils, so for those with a lot of guns it would not be the best. Remoil does dry fast, but it has teflon in it which is a lubricant its self, clp also falls in this catagory. Hoppes #9 is a good oil that will last for a long time. any low detergant motor oil will last a long time. I know there are a lot more oils out ther,
I like to oil my rifles and shotguns heavy, and wipe them off before using, now the pistol that I carry and keep by my bedside I do not want slipery, so not as much oil.
so just find what will best fit your needs and go for it.

CLP and silicone cleaning rags.
The CLP preservative is good for long term storage. It's really thick, so it is a bit messy.
I've always liked using the big shotgun patches for cleaning the insides of my guns. That's what I use to apply oil or CLP to the outsides too.
