Maybe check out the thread you started earlier this month on the same subject...

I travel with guns in my checked bag on various airlines a few times a year. Here's what I do...

Go to airline website, read rules, print them out and follow them.
Go to TSA website, read rules, print them out and follow them.

As long as you understand and follow the rules, you're unlikely to have a problem. I've never had one in the 12+ years I've been traveling with a gun.

Pray that your flight does NOT get diverted to a New Jersey or New York airport and you get stuck for the night. A individual's flight was diverted to Newark, because of weather, put up in hotel provided by the airline for the night. The next day, he did what he was supposed to do and check his handgun, he was carrying a concealed weapon in his suitcase in the state of New Jersey without a license for concealed carry in New Jersey and no concealed carry reciprocity with the permits he did have. This did not turn out well for this individual.

Simple solution is to not retrieve your baggage. Airline will keep it overnight, at least they did the only time I've ever gotten stuck. They offered to get it, but I figured getting to the hotel that night, and back through security in the morning would be faster without. Keep a change of clothes in your carry-on. Hotels generally have toiletries if you need anything that way that wasn't in your carry-on.

The man in the NJ case spent 7 months in jail until Christie finally stepped in. Guess Christie is a busy man, as well as his aides who could have brought it to his attention and made up the forms for him to sign.

    Revell was handcuffed, held overnight
at the Port Authority jail, and then transferred to the Essex
County, New Jersey, Jail, where he was incarcerated for three
days until he was released on bond
    . Four months later, on
August 2, 2005, the Essex County prosecutor administratively
dismissed all of the charges against him.

Your not leaving from NJ or going there. ANY flight could be diverted to NJ. IF that happened, I would tell the airlines to keep control of the bag. How can it be a voluntary act if they divert.

First time I traveled with a gun I contacted the ATF, they said to check with the TSA, TSA said check with airport, airport said check with the airline, airline said 'huh?".

    Just follow the rules.

The 'voluntary act' in the Revell case was his knowingly taking possession of the firearm laden luggage from the airline thereby losing any attaching FOPA transport protection and immediately becoming subject to local (NJ) laws. You are correct that leaving the baggage in the airline's possession is the best solution.

Didn't someone spend 7 months in jail over some mistake made with a gun? Maybe I'm thinking of the guy who wound up in Mexico? Sorry for posting bad info.
