Default I accidentally shot over the berm today

I was going to post this in the competition area but it doesn't get much traffic. It's also a shooting and safety topic.
I screwed up big time at an IDPA match today. It was a pretty easy stage. 4 targets, 1 shot on each freestyle, strong hand then weak hand. I was transferring the gun from my right to my left hand. I normally have my weak hand open, fingers extended almost like clapping to transfer the gun. This time my trigger finger was curled in slightly and I hit the trigger with my left trigger finger and sent a round into the woods.Thank God this range is in the middle of nowhere.
I've been shooting competitions for about 7 years and I have never done anything this stupid. I got DQ'd for the first time. I'm thankful no one got hurt.

I just wanted to post this so people keep in mind to be careful. No matter how much you shoot you can still screw up. I think what shocked me the most was the round went over the berm. I thought my muzzle was lowe, it was a real eye opener.

I am glad that you and others were not harmed.
A very good teaching lesson, you did good posting it.
One way to avoid a floating finger negligent discharge is to use a gun with a heavier trigger pull.
I am not speaking to your event specifically, since many experienced shooters prefer a lighter trigger for competition or other reasons.
But for a new shooter, or even an experienced shooter, a heavier trigger pull of 6 to 8 pounds is an excellent additional safety to prevent a floating finger negligent discharge.
I always strongly recommend this to new shooters, especially new CCW's.
I am well trained, and have been carrying for decades, and I still prefer to carry a gun with a 6 to 8 pound trigger pull.
My carry gun is a Glock 23 Gen 4, and its trigger pull of 5.5 pounds is just heavy enough for me to still feel comfortable with it.
Again, I know this doesn't necessarily apply to your situation, but I thought the information may be useful to new shooters.

It hurts our pride but "There are two kinds of people in regards to AD/ND, those who have had one and those who will". I don't care how experienced or safety oriented you are Shit Happens, this is why the most important safety rules involve muzzle control.

Generally speaking, it takes three rules to be violated for tradgeties to happen. Atleast that's the gist of the OSHA traing class I took. Not an excuse to violate one or two, incase someone misunderstands the point.

This should also reinforce the "don't go around the right side of the house" rule* in the minds of those who don't "get" it.

Glad everyone got to go home.

Sounds like your ego was hurt more than anything else. Its events like these which only reaffirm our need to be super vigilant and keep safety as the number one factor when shooting period.

I bet you learn from this as I am sure we all will.
