    Default Survival Food Source

[Mods, please move if this is in the wrong place.]

This is an interesting question that came up in a discussion I had with my kids (ages 9 and twins, 6).

We were discussing the idea of "if it's what I could find that day and it's on the table, you'll eat it if you're hungry enough". I mentioned dog. One of the twins asked "What about [the 9yr old]? My 9yr old is VERY allergic to dogs, way beyond sinuses and itchy eyes. He starts to have breathing issues and breaks out in hives where they rub against him or lick him.

I recognize that this is a medical question, but knowing the depth of knowledge here at PAFOA and the like mindedness of the crew here, I figured I would throw the question out here.

Would my highly allergic to dogs 9yr old be able to eat dog in the event of a major crisis?

More than likely, yes. the 9 yr old is allergic to the dogs coat and dander not the meat.

Unless your son has a food allergy to other forms of meat, or red meat, eat up.

I agree the meat should be fine. Hair and dander are the issue. As far as eating what it takes to live, look no farther than the Donner party, or better yet watch the movie Alive. It might be gross to eat a domesticated animal, however I would do it.

We don't have a dog. The neighbors, on the other hand, do......

Rules are written in the stone,
Break the rules and you get no bones,
all you get is ridicule, laughter,
and a trip to the house of pain.
