Default New to the AR Platform and Seeking advice.

I just had my FFL order me a new DPMS Oracle 308. I do not know much about these rifles, and I am wondering what I will need to know to learn the ropes with the AR platform. I don't know how to take it apart or clean it, and I assume there are tools I will need. Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Isaac

You won't need any tools to field strip and clean it and the manual will tell you how to field strip it and clean it properly.

Consider going to the DPMS website and download the manual (if it is available online). The manual will tell you everything you need to know on safety, loading, disassembling, and cleaning. It's probably a good idea to download this in advance since some folks don't have time to read a manual when the gun/rifle is in their hands.

I don't know what the length (16"?) or twist is on the barrel, but if it's 1/10, you may want to consider using 175gr bullets.

Also don't know if you're a reloader, but eventually with all the equipment you'll purchase, you can reload "match grade" rounds that are tailored to your rifle. I know you'll enjoy the "break-in" period.

Any plan for optics? What are you thinking about and for what distance shooting (25-100 yds, 100-300 yds, 300-600 yds, all of the above)?

Don't even begin to judge "accuracy" until you have had at least 200 rounds through it. FWIW, the rounds you select are a factor, the distance and temp are factors, and so is the fellow (YOU!) behind the rifle.

You're going to have a great time...

Youtube is your friend for this. Tons of videos on how to properly disassemble and clean your rifle, the carrier and bolt. They'll also show all the critical lube spots.

This is the very best AR platform disassembly, clean, lube and reassembly video I've ever seen, concentrate.

Thanks for the info Bamboomaster! As for optics, I think I will be going with the Nikon M-308. Most of my shots will be under 300 yards, but I do have the desire to occasionally try out to 500 yards. I don't currently reload, but I am interested in doing so. I have a friend from church who reloads and I plan to pick his brain at some point on how to get started with reloading. SO after approximately 200 shots, this gun should be done with it's break in period? So I'm guessing to start out I should shoot the cheapest ammo possible until the gun is broken in?

Any ammo brand that you all might recommend to start out with? Something cheap/ in bulk would be nice.
