I'd rather have a gun in my hand then a cop on the phone.

Don't tell the check-in personnel that you plan on hijacking the plane.

Just have your keys handy, firearm unloaded and locked in a hard sided case and let the agent know when you check in. If you are taking ammo make sure its in the same hard sided locked case, and in original packaging (rounds can't be 'touching'). They will have you sign a certifying note that its unloaded and then you'd have to walk it through a security baggage check area. I use to fly w/firearms on a regular basis and never had an issue except once when the ammo box came open and they asked me to remove the rounds since they were touching each other (weird I know).

Ammo doesn't have to be in the same hard case as firearm, but as Spyder mentioned, it can't be loose.

I don't have the original boxes my carry ammo came in.... So I just use an ammo box like this one.

And gave it a few wraps of clear packaging tape.

Where do you put the ammo if it is not in the same locked case? I know carry on is bad but can it me in your checked luggage? Locked?

I assume you have to declare it too.

Well I guess one should specify. I was referencing hand guns.... In which the hard case is usually in your check in luggage. I put my box of ammunition in my check in luggage.

If you are going through the airport with a long arm, then you probably have a hard case for just your rifle, in which you could have the ammunition in the same hard case.

I have kept ammo in the magazines inside the locked case as well as in an ammo box just inside the checked luggage multiple times without issues. Never declared ammo, but it always accompanied a declared firearm.

I have always had to show my firearm to the agent at the ticket desk when departing from Orlando (only there, everywhere else let's me just show them the locked box) so I make it a point to put it in the box with the slide locked back, just so I don't have to handle it to show them it's unloaded.

In Tampa when I told the baggage clerk I had a gun in checked bag I was directed to a special TSA check in, TSA x-rayed it (I think) and took it from there. When I picked the bag up after landing the bag had wide yellow tape wrapped around it. Tape said "inspected by TSA".

He never said anything about a firearm.
