Inexpensive AR15 Magazine Carriers / Go Bag (pics)

I just got these in from Sportsman's Guide and thought I'd take some pics and share.

Lots of people keep bug out bags or "go-bags" handy for a wide variety of reasons. Everyone has their own idea of what one of those should be, so if this doesn't fit your vision, or otherwise will not work for you, that's fine. Feel free to add your own ideas!

I like the idea of having small amounts of rifle food at the ready for a quick grab-and-go, or to be distributed to others in an emergency. (think violent civil unrest)
I have no plans to load up a case of ammo and head for the mountains, I just want some ammo or mags that are ready to go.

While there are certainly more effective means of stashing mags, I'm not inclined to spend a lot of money on things that are realistically probably never going to be used. If one can afford to do so, great! I can't. I also have no military background, so for those who do, feel free to share thoughts on the subject as I'm sure there are lots of other methods of doing what I'm attempting here.

These were dirt cheap and seem to fit the bill for what I wanted.


The surplus 6-mag USGI bandoliers (BANDOLIER AMMO POUCH, 6 MAGAZINE) are handy on their own. (sold out)
They were $2.00 each. They are made to carry USGI mags so Pmags and other polymer mags likely will not fit two per pouch. (I could only snap the flap closed with one Pmag in each)
Troy Battle mags fit two per pouch in the one I tested.
There's a video on Youtube where a guy modified his by moving the snap and adding a pull tab in order to carry Pmags and mags with ranger plates.

The "military style" Map Bags (link) provide more versatility and while not military issue (made in India), the quality is better than I expected.
They were around $12.00 for a TWO-pack.
Even if they don't pan out for what I purchased them for, I will be able to find a use for them.
The bag has a rigid back (something is sewn inside the fabric) and has a divider in the center as well as a small pouch on the front with elastic pen holders.

I found that the divided areas are sized perfectly for AR15 mags - 9 USGI mags fit in one row and 8 Pmags fit in the other.
I don't know that I'd want to carry 17 LOADED mags in here though as it can become quite heavy.
I haven't decided HOW I will utilize these yet - I just thought I'd show that they do fit and how they fit.
AK47 mags fit as well, but must be oriented differently due to the extreme curve of the mag.

Two of the previously mentioned bandoliers will fit in the bag when placed in on their sides!

The bandoliers of six mags fit perfectly...








And the flap closes and snaps just fine.
I tried adding two 20 rd mags to the front pouch and while they fit perfectly, the flap would not close along with the two bandoliers inserted.

Six 30 rd AK47 mags fit in each compartment when oriented this way. (I didn't feel like going and getting another one for the photo)

I bought one of these a few years ago. I see it as having both pros and cons to the OP's solution. The most obvious con being price. One could purchase multiple of either of the above for the cost of one of these. But, it should be more sturdy, can easily stack or be stacked and I imagine you could throw a few fish or food related stickers on the side and pass it off as a tackle or big lunch box.

I would have grabbed a couple if I had seen how large they are.
From the description they sounded like map cases, not very "thick".

I was given a $25 gift card for thanksgiving, picked up 7-mag pouches, and a 2-pack of the map pockets for $24 and some change. The map pockets are larger than I had thought, my first thought was to use them as a med bok. When I received them today, a bit big for what I had envisioned. But, maybe a six pack of mags in the rear portion, and a bok in the front, with a little room to spare in the front pocket, maybe a small cleaning kit and/or a boo boo kit.

I like your idea of the 2-bandolier in the map pocket though.....hmm, gotta think on this a bit more.

Quick and cheap way to have a few things on hand at your ready.
