Newbie. Question about transporting gun from airport to home
Hi. I live in Allegheny County, PA. I am in AZ visiting family. My dad would like to gift a gun to me. I flew here and will be flying back. My question is, can I drive the gun from the airport in PA back to my home. I researched online and read the rules on how to correctly carry a gun on an airplane. I also read the rules about carry a gun in a vehicle but it is unclear if I can drive it from the airport to my house. I do not have a license to carry a concealed firearm. I know I can carry a gun in my car unloaded from place of purchase to home, business to home, etc. just to clarification if I can drive it back from airport.

Assuming you are a PA resident and you dad is a AZ resident, I believe the only way to insure no problems is to have the gun shipped to a PA FFL so you can complete the transfer in PA if you are referring to a handgun. If it is a long gun, you must have a FFL transfer in either state. This is the federal law as I recall.
Normal disclaimer -- I am not a lawyer. Don't take a chance.

ship it properly from a FFL to a FFL? save hassle, small additional cost.
consult a firearms lawyer on the issue and to ensure they are willing to represent you if things go sideways?
ianal.
airport + gun is probably the dumbest idea right now... jussayin. even legally transporting them... i see visions of TSA swarms and hails of gunfire in panic over the X-ray results. There is no way to make it out alive...

Re: Newbie. Question about transporting gun from airport to home
I wouldn't worry about the trip from the airport. I would worry more about the gift. If I'm not mistaken, interstate transfers of any type of firearm (even parent to child) must be done in the recipients state through an FFL. So your question is moot. Someone correct me if I am mistaken.

You are not misstaken Pete. Ffl to ffl is the law for any interstate even father to son.

Handgun or long gun?
IIRC, long gun transfer can be done at an FFL in any state.
If it's a handgun, then yet, it needs to be shipped (or Dad needs to fly to PA and take it) to a PA FFL for the transfer.

This is just ignorant. If you follow the TSA and airline regulations for flying with a firearm, you will be fine. People do it every day.
However, like others have mentioned, you need to do an FFL transfer if you live in a different state than your father. A FFL in any state for a long gun, a FFL in your home state if it's a handgun.

Re: Newbie. Question about transporting gun from airport to home
Thanks all. Very awesome forum. I appreciate the thorough and fast replies. I am going to try and go for Ffl to ffl. There is a Cabelas here in AZ and a Big Buck Sports Shop here. Both FFl but when I asked big bucks if they do interstate transfers he said "yes and no" and was kind of trying to get me just take it on airplane with me. Anyways, I will try to find a place that is game for doing it. Thanks again all.
