Intruder hospitalized after being shot in the neck by Botetourt County homeowner
Shooting happened on Ball Park Road

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. - The man authorities say broke into a Botetourt County home is in the hospital after being shot by one of the homeowners Thursday afternoon, according to the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office.

At about 4:30 p.m. the Sheriff's Office received a call about a person who forced his way into a home in the 3300 block of Ball Park Road, near Eagle Rock.

A man reportedly entered the home, pointed a gun at the female homeowner and demanded that she give him the keys to her truck.

When she refused and yelled for another person in the home, the intruder began firing his weapon inside the home.

Another resident retrieved a weapon, came down the stairs and he fired one shot at the intruder, who was coming up the stairs, hitting him in the neck.

Deputies found the intruder lying in the front yard. The man, who was in stable condition, was secured and transported to the hospital by rescue personnel.

The residents of the home did not know the intruder.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the intruder had been staying in the area for the past three weeks after being dropped off by family members and was attempting to get back to the Roanoke area.

Charges against the intruder are pending.

At this time, deputies are still on the scene and the incident is under investigation.

Robbery Victim Fires At Crime Spree Suspects in Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The owner of a Little Havana bakery was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday morning and Miami Police believe the suspects are connected to at least seven other robberies in the past 24 hours.

According to police, the business owner was opening Ela’s Bakery Cafe, on 503 NW 12th Ave, when he was asked for the time by someone.

When he turned around, a man sitting in the front passenger side of a dark-colored, four-door sedan was pointing a gun at him. Another suspect got out of the car with a revolver and demanded the victim’s money and car keys.

The victim handed over his wallet but not the car keys, because he told them he only had the keys to the bakery.

When the suspect began running back to the car, the victim pulled out a gun of his own and fired several shots at them, officers said.

Police do not know if any of the suspects were hit.

The suspects escaped in the car with possibly two more people inside.

“We do suspect that the same individuals are involved in other robberies today and maybe a few days back,” said Miami Police spokesman Mike Vega. “We’ve had a couple of robberies throughout last night.”

Vega said the string of robberies are suspected to have occurred in the Little Havana area to the Coral Way area and the suspects follow the same process.

They get out of their vehicle, described as a dark colored or silver sedan, commit the crimes in pairs only, always ask for the time and once the victim turns around, they pull out their weapons and demand money and jewelry.

“We can say from Little Havana to Flagami to the Coral Way area all within a few days,” said Vega. “Most of the robberies have occurred during the night time.”

The owner of a small cafe/market next to the bakery said a similar incident happened to her Monday morning, when one person walked in and tried to take the tip jar, but failed. She said the suspect jumped into a car with someone else driving off.

The woman said this is not the first time they have tried to steal from her business and described the area as dangerous.

Vega said they are still investigating all of the incidents to try and piece them together.

Store owner slashed before thwarting robbery attempt

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The owner of a Providence liquor store is recovering after he was slashed by a would-be robber.

City police are still searching for the masked suspect who entered Manton Liquors armed with a knife around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the police report obtained by Eyewitness News, the suspect demanded the clerk hand over the contents of the cash register and when the owner came up behind him, he chased the owner around the counter.

“I turned and I see him running, he ran across the counter came back, and all he kept saying was, ‘Open the register, give me your money, give me your money, give me your money,'” the store’s owner, Joseph Mosca, recalled. “I came up behind him, I had two cans of Pepsi in my hand, and I was going to smack him with that until I saw the knife.”

Mosca said the suspect’s weapon appeared to be a six-inch kitchen knife. As Mosca tried to keep the suspect away from the register, police said the suspect started slashing at him.

Despite suffering multiple lacerations to his right hand and forearm, Mosca reached for his firearm under the counter.

“As soon as he saw the weapon he just dashed right by me,” owner Joseph Mosca said. “He didn’t scream but he just kept saying all the way out, “oh crap, oh crap, oh crap.” He freaked out and ran.”

“I didn’t know that my finger was slashed until I saw blood on my gun,” he added.

Mosca was taken to Roger Williams Hospital for treatment. He said he got six stitches on his hand.

Eyewitnesses told police the suspect ran up Steuben Street towards Amherst Street. He’s described as a black man wearing a black mask, a dark-colored, long-sleeve shirt, red baseball hat, and royal blue gloves, possibly surgical.

The suspect didn’t get any money but Mosca and his surveillance system got a good look at him.

When asked why he fought back, Mosca said “it’s a personal thing.”

“Some people really don’t care. They’d open the register and give it to them,” he said. “I’m a thick-headed Italian. I work hard for my money and I don’t give it up that easy.”

Sheriff confirms man shot in Aptos was attempted burglar
    APTOS, Calif. —
    Burglar shot by Aptos resident
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office say a man shot Thursday on Cedar St. in Aptos was attempting to break into a home when he was shot by the resident.

Deputies say they went to the home at 3:38 a.m. after getting a 911 call from the resident about a man trying to break into the home.

The resident fired multiple shots at the intruder, hitting him several times.

This confirms what neighbors told KSBW-TV 8 Thursday. Some people told us that the man had also tried to break into other nearby homes.

The immediate investigation showed there was no prior relationship between the two.

The man is being treated for his injuries at a Bay Area trauma center and is expected to survive.

The Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the shooting and continues looking for witnesses.

Sheriff: Burglary spree ends with homeowner holding suspect at gunpoint
    Chris Thies
LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - A suspected burglar’s crime spree ended when a homeowner caught him in the act and held him at gunpoint until authorities arrived, according to Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel.

Rigel said 18-year-old Gauge Braxton Jordan, of Hattiesburg, is charged in several burglaries, including breaking into a church.

According to the sheriff, deputies were called to a home on Oloh Road in Sumrall around 6:20 a.m. on Thursday to respond to a reported burglary. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found the homeowner holding Jordan at gunpoint.

The homeowner told deputies he became suspicious when he heard his dog barking and went outside to see what was going on. The man reportedly saw Jordan trying to break into his house through a window, so the homeowner grabbed a shotgun, confronted Jordan and called the sheriff’s office.

Rigel said deputies found two handguns on Jordan and cuts with blood running down his arms. Investigators believed the injuries were from burglaries Jordan had already committed.

After further investigation, Rigel said deputies discovered Jordan had also broken into the homeowner’s vehicle parked in his yard, Military Baptist Church and two other vehicles at a home near the church.

Rigel said investigators found a broken window at the church with blood on the glass. Deputies called the pastor of Military Baptist to check the property, and the pastor reported that it appeared nothing was taken.

Jordan is being held at the Lamar County Jail, charged with attempted residential burglary, commercial burglary of a church and three counts of auto burglary. Rigel said more charges are possible as the investigation continues.

According to jail records, Jordan’s bond was set at $90,000.

Dog owner shoots rabid raccoon in Royalton
By Thomas J. Prohaska8 hours ago

A fight between a dog and a raccoon Saturday in Royalton ended with the dog's owner shooting the raccoon to death, Niagara County Environmental Health Director Paul R. Dicky said Thursday.

The raccoon later tested positive for rabies, making it the second confirmed case of a rabid animal in the county this year.

The incident occurred on Mountain Road, about a mile south of Middleport. The dog had been vaccinated against rabies, but it was still required to receive a booster shot and be kept under observation for 45 days, the Health Department announced.

The first rabies case in the county this year came last month, when a raccoon bit two sheep on a farm on Ditch Road, also in Royalton.

A free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. July 13 at the Royalton Highway Department, 5316 Royalton Center Road. It's open to all Niagara County residents.

Security guard justified in fatal shooting at Cedarwood Towers, grand jury rules
    Will Cleveland
Here's a breakdown of the stories right now at www.democratandchronicle.com. Tina MacIntyre-Yee, @tyee23

A security guard will not face any criminal charges after a Monroe County grand jury determined his actions were justified in the fatal shooting of a man in early January.

The licensed security guard was justified when he shot and killed Bradley Thomas, 26, in the parking lot of the Cedarwood Towers on East Main Street on Jan. 8, 2019, the Monroe County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

The DA's office declined to name the security guard. After the investigation and presentation to the grand jury, "It was determined that Mr. Thomas was acting in a manic state, harassing others and threatened the defendant."

Thomas lived in the building. He was threatening other residents in the lobby of the building when the security guard intervened. Police said he got in a scuffle with the on-duty security guard.

The security guard made multiple calls to 911 to report the situation and request help, prosecutors said. Police didn't immediately respond, and the altercation spilled into the parking lot, where it escalated into a physical confrontation.

The security guard fired his legally-registered firearm once at Thomas and struck Thomas in the upper body. Thomas was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by American Medical Response, where he later died from his injuries.

We will see how this one goes. In the end it sounds like the guy used a gun to defend himself. If he was in that situation without a gun things could have turned out badly for him. He is in New York and was charged with possession of a firearm (as well as possession of marijuana).

Charges filed against man in Staten Island teen-shooting twist
    By Irene Spezzamonte | ispezzamonte@siadvance.com
Updated Jun 21, 4:25 PM; Posted Jun 21, 4:06 PM
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Police have filed drug and weapon charges against a man who they say fatally shot a teen who tried to break into his shed in Richmond Valley early Thursday morning.

Anthony Lampo, 57, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm, according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

He is not charged with the death of Christopher Redmond, 19, of Pleasant Plains.

Lampo, who resided in a living space above the detached shed on the 600 block of Page Avenue, told police he heard banging and the sound of breaking glass at around 4 a.m. on Thursday, law enforcement sources told the Advance.

He told police he came down and encountered Redmond wearing a mask and warned him he had a gun.

A struggle ensued over the shotgun and a shot was fired, mortally wounding Redmond, the resident told cops. The teen staggered out to Page Avenue.

He attempted to call 911 from his cell phone in a desperate bid for help before he collapsed to the ground.

He was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital in Prince’s Bay.

When police responded to Page Avenue, they found the bloody cell phone and a mask and gloves next to Redmond, sources said.

They also found a small amount of marijuana in the shed, sources said.

Police are trying to determine why Redmond chose Lampo’s residence, and whether Redmond was there alone.

Lampo is expected to be in Criminal Court in St. George Saturday.

Further information will be posted as it becomes available.
