Witnesses stop, shoot guns at crime in progress

New information on a woman who was killed on the northeast side 89-year-old John Bogard is now charged with murder, accused of running that woman over several times with his car.

Two witnesses with no relation to the victim, say they pulled their cars over and shot at Bogard as he ran over the victim.

Now, the conversation isn't even about whether what they did was right but whether or not it was legal.

Sergeant David Renn with the San Antonio Police was on the scene and describes the actions sparking the conversation.

"Two of the witnesses were passing by saw all of this occurring, stopped their vehicles got out and they were concealed handgun holders and began firing at the individual." Renn said.

The question now were their actions even legal? Mike Taylor has some expertise in the subject.

"I'm a certified handgun instructor and license to carry instructor for the state of Texas.” Taylor said.

He said the shooters should not face charges.

"With this situation, there is defense of a third person you're not required by law to go to the aid of the third person but legally you can." Taylor said.

But Taylor said just because you can doesn't mean you should.

"When you come up to a scene like this defense of a third person when everything is happening so fast it's so easy to make a mistake, there's a lot of liability there as far as hitting someone else that's innocent that would end up being manslaughter if they killed em.” Taylor said.

So we asked Taylor what would you do in this situation?

"I would probably assess the situation first and use my vehicle before I drew my gun." Taylor said.

For one particular reason which he says applies to all gun owners.

"You're accountable for every round you fire, if you kill someone accidentally they're going to charge you for this.” Taylor said.

Still no word yet on whether the two witnesses who fired the shots will face any charges, but Sergeant David Renn with SAPD said on the scene he does not think they will be charged.

Gifford resident holds accused burglar at gunpoint until deputies arrive
    Lamaur StancilUpdated 9:36 p.m. ET May 20, 2018
The man was taken into custody after a resident accused him of burglarizing his home Lamaur Stancil, lamaur.stancil@tcpalm.com

GIFFORD — A man who said his home had been broken into used his video surveillance system and a handgun to find and apprehend the accused burglar Sunday.

"I checked my cameras and saw this young man moving stuff and taking stuff out of my yard," said Elijah Lofton, who drove a short distance from his home and saw someone walking along 26th Avenue dressed just like the man he saw in the video.

About 4:15 p.m., a woman called the Indian River Sheriff's Office about an altercation between Lofton and the man, who deputies later identified as 43-year-old Kevin Antonio Odom, in the 4400 block of 26th.

"I drove down here to talk with him about it and he took a swing at me," said Lofton, 55. "He tried to run. I caught up with him."

A Gifford man said he held a burglar at gunpoint Sunday

When he did, Lofton brandished a handgun and ordered Odom to stay until the Indian River County Sheriff's Office arrived. Lofton said he is a concealed carry weapon permit holder.

Lofton said he was missing a cell phone charger, some jewelry and other items. Deputies handed him several items they found on Odom. Lofton said he and his girlfriend arrived at his home around noon and discovered things were out of place outside his home.

Lofton said he bought his surveillance system eight years ago after he had a couple of burglaries at his home.

Odom, who authorities said was homeless, was charged with burglary and petty theft. He was being held without bail at the Indian River County Jail Sunday.

In this one, the threat of a gun stopped the crime.

'Grab the gun!': Attempted robbery caught on doorbell camera
ST. LOUIS – A man was ambushed by three young people as he climbed the stairs to his front porch. It was all caught on his Ring Doorbell surveillance cameras.

The video shows a man in his 80’s standing on his front porch when three teenagers approach him and point a gun in his direction.

He calls out to his wife to “bring out the gun,” and the three suspects quickly run off in the direction of Halliday and Compton. The homeowner called St. Louis Police, who told him they would be stepping up patrols in the neighborhood.

“It's like a kick in the stomach in a way,” said Josh Burbridge, who lives next door. “It doesn’t necessarily change the way that I feel like I'm going to be out in my neighborhood, because things happen in St. Louis, but it is a real bummer.”

This article has a few examples of citizens with guns making a difference. Most have already been posted in this thread. But I am including the article because the point it is making is the point of this thread.

    https://thehayride.com/2018/05/media...-saving-lives/
Media Ignores Stories of Responsible Gun Owners Saving Lives

According to a Centers for Disease Control statistic, “firearms are used far more often to save life” by a ratio of 16 to 100 times more often. Yet the mainstream media doesn’t report this. They also don’t report on the numerous incidents of responsible gun owners stopping crimes from being committed.

Most Americans never heard about a school resource officer who used gun to stop a school shooter in Illinois. Officer Mark Dallas, who worked at Dixon High School for five years, shot and arrested 19-year-old Matthew A. Milby, who was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge at a school employee and aggravated discharge at a school building. Milby was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a school resource officer, remains hospitalized with what authorities describe as non-life-threatening injuries and is under surveillance. A Lee County judge set bond at $2 million.

“He saved an enormous amount of lives,” Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said of Officer Dallas. His comments were echoed by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, who in a statement credited “Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a dangerous situation.”

Most Americans have never heard of the Memphis, Tennessee father who stopped armed robbers at a local McDonalds who were trying to rob him while he was holding his infant daughter. WREG quotes police who stated that he was able to put his baby down, reach for his gun and wound one of his four attackers.

In Raleigh, North Carolina, police reported that a shooting in the Brintons Cottage neighborhood was case of self-defense. Three people broke into a home and the owner fired at them, killing one and injuring two others. The two injured were charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, first-degree burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon. They were stopped by the home owner who used his gun for self-defense– exactly what it was designed for.

There’s also the incident last month when the Florida man used his AR-15 to stop seven intruders from illegally entering his home. And many others of self-defense.

Most Americans have not heard about the brave Marine Corps veteran and armed gas station clerk in Joelton, Tennessee who stopped an armed robber and then got towels and performed mouth to mouth on his attacker to keep him alive. According to WSMV, “58-year-old Zane Friend was outside taking a break when [three] armed men reportedly started running at him.” Gonzales allegedly had a shotgun with him, but Friend was able to draw his pistol and shoot first. He struck Gonzales in the abdomen. The two others fled. Then Friend ran inside to get towels and came back out to keep Gonzales alive by performing CPR on him until first responders got there.

    Talk about character.

Erich Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners for America, argues that the media ignores “the fact that more than 10,100 Americans have died in car accidents since the Parkland shooting.” What would it be like if the media reported on every tragic car death in the country?

He also points to a recent Johns Hopkins study that claims that more than 250,000 people in America die from medical errors. Medical errors, it reports are the third-leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer. But the media doesn’t report on every death (684 everyday) due to doctors’ negligence, he argues.

The best defense against a bad guy with a gun continues to be a good guy (or woman) with a gun.

Business owner shot at suspected burglar Thursday evening, deputies say

A south Bakersfield business owner fired a single round at a burglar who broke into his establishment Thursday evening, according to sheriff's officials.

A deputy heard the gunshot and found and detained the suspected burglar, 48-year-old Peter Marquez, who had a mask covering his face.

Marquez had broken into a business in the 1800 block of South Chester Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., according to sheriff's officials. The owner was inside and fired a single round at Marquez.

Suspected intruder in critical condition after being shot inside home
    Most Popular Our Picks
Police are saying the shooting of the man is justified

A 30-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday morning after he was shot hours earlier by a resident in what police have called a justifiable shooting of an intruder.

A Facebook post confirmed by an Ocala Police Department official states the suspect — possibly an ex-boyfriend — tried to gain entry into a home around 1 a.m. in the 4500 block of Southeast 14th Street.

The homeowner, who was out of town, alerted law enforcement when her security system was triggered, the post states. The homeowner’s children — including an adult child — were home and the suspect was gone when officers arrived.

However, the post says, the man returned after 4 a.m. and got into the house and was shot around 4:30 a.m. by an adult child as the suspect ran toward a bedroom where younger siblings were located.

The suspect reportedly jumped out of a second-story window and was found a few blocks away by police and transported to a local hospital.

OPD has “deemed the shooting justifiable” and stated the identities of the family and the suspect are not being released “for the family’s protection.”

Police: Man shoots nephew during Letcher home invasion
    Chris AndersonMay 21, 2018
A man was shot in Letcher County late last week during an alleged home invasion attempt.

Kentucky State Police tells EKB News that Adam Henrickson was shot by his uncle, Robbie Fugate, at Fugate’s residence in the Blackey community of Letcher County.

KSP spokesperson Master Trooper Jody Sims said the two had been having problems for a couple of days and Henrickson was allegedly trying to get inside of Fugate’s residence to confront him. Sims said Fugate shot through the door, striking his nephew in the leg.

Henrickson was taken to Whitesburg ARH Hospital and then on to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Sims said no charges have been filed at this time.

Florida man shoots, kills dogs to protect kids and goats - wptv.com

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Caleb Lowman says he was forced to use his shotgun on his neighbor's three dogs when they escaped their cage and began attacking his goats.

“When I came out, I had the shotgun with me with the hopes it wouldn’t have to be used,” Lowman said.

Lowman says this isn't the first time the dogs have gotten out and been aggressive. On last Monday, the dogs got out of their fence and attacked the goats in his yard. Photos show the goats suffered bite marks up and down their neck and legs.

However, one of the dogs' owners, Jake Hutto, claims his pets have never been aggressive.

“I don’t understand how it’s possible to shoot three dogs in the head, to blow their face off," Hutto said.

Lowman's family called Animal Control after last week's incident and says they safely returned all three dogs to the neighbors. Five days later, Lowman says it happened again — this time in front of his 13-year-old daughter, Chloe.

“I had to go outside and watch basically my babies be attacked by dogs," said Chloe.

Lowman says despite his family's efforts, the dogs killed two of the goats. That's when he pulled out his shotgun and killed all three dogs. Hutto came home to find that Animal Control had left his pets in three large trash bags.

“There’s nothing more you can do, nothing’s going to bring them back,” Hutto said.

Records show several citations had been issued from Animal Control to the dog owners' household. But with two goats and three dogs now gone, Lowman says this isn't what he wanted.

"This time it was our goats, Monday it was our goats; if we let that happen again that could have been my children," he said. "It didn’t need to be this way if they just secured their dogs."

A spokesperson for Animal Control says this is an active investigation. Lowman claims when he put in his final statement today at Animal Control, he was told two citations would be issued against the dog owners. He says the citations are for dogs menacing and harassing livestock and running at large.

Clerk shoots robbery suspect in leg at 7-Eleven in Pleasant Grove

A robbery suspect was shot in the leg while holding up a convenience store Tuesday morning in Pleasant Grove, Dallas police say.

Mario Luera, 32, was arrested and taken to Baylor University Medical Center.
Police found Luera shortly before 2 a.m. at a gas station in the 8000 block of Great Trinity Forest Way, where he had gone after he had been shot.

Earlier, about 12:45 a.m., police were called to a 7-Eleven in the 10200 block of Lake June Road in Pleasant Grove to investigate a robbery.

A store clerk there told officers a man entered the store, took a few items and even tried to take the cash register.
The robber pushed the clerk away, who then pulled out a handgun and shot him in the leg, police said. The clerk's name was not released.
Luera was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a robbery charge, jail records show. His bail is pending.
